A truly excellent book written with passion and backed by an inordinate amount of research. The opening salvo, conversely called 'The Final Blow', was the most poignant description of the 1st World War that I have ever read. The ‘Final Whistle’ looks at the 1st World War through the eyes and memories of 15 men who all played for a small rugby club in London all of whom died in the prime of their youth. The book perfectly captures the aspects of British Empire, and its romantic yet poisoned 'pull' on those of its 'subjects' who lived in far-away lands as well as the underlying social divides in English society which came to the fore after the war ended. An engrossing book which deservedly won the Rugby Book of the Year in the 2013 British Sports Book Awards.

Really good book about 15 rugby players (and some rowers and cricketers too) who died in the Great War. What is revealed mostly is the total stupidity of putting so many men in harm's way during this war via decisions of British generals who weren't ready for staging 20th century warfare when the war started, and for some time into the war as well.

I have just combined 2 of my great loves, rugby and history in one book. The Final Whistle tells of 15 Rosslyn Park rugby players killed during WW1, and some of the games history and sacrifice during The Great War. Rugby has a proud history in many many ways, and this book highlights a period where the traits of Rugby Players came through in a significant ways. The book demonstrates what all rugby lovers have known for many years, that there is more to rugby than what happens on the field. There is a way of life that comes with it. A way of life that includes honour, sacrifice, pain and love of team mates and country. Thank you Steven for your book, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to know more about world rugbys contribution to The Great War.

Well written, interesting perception of World War I, as viewed by committed to service rugby players.
