About the Author
On August 25, 2002, Shaun was sworn in as a police officer. Shaun currently works at a smaller full-service police agency along the US and Mexico International Border and is assigned as a Field Training Officer. Shaun’s law enforcement experience, as it relates to private investigations, is unique in that his agency lacks investigative resources that are an abundance in larger agencies. For example, Shaun's agency only has one detective for the whole city. By 2015, 90% of specialized assignments were closed and disbanded, including the narcotic division, traffic division, school resource officers, and other specialized assignments. The reason for pointing out these deficiencies, is that since there are a lack of resources, all officers at his department must fill this void by becoming clever and inventive — all while serving a population of 50,000 people. All officers at Shaun's agency are responsible for follow-up investigation duties and are usually assigned as the investigating officer during court proceedings. During Shaun's tenure, he has managed major crime scenes, fatal and severe traffic collisions, performed internal affairs investigations, handled citizen complaints, performed pre-employment background investigations, and managed the Criminal Analysis Unit consisting of San Diego State University interns. Shaun has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice (San Diego State) and while writing this book, he earned his Master of Public Administration degree from Kaplan University. Between 2010 and 2017, Shaun was hired as a part-time instructor at Brightwood College (formerly Kaplan College) teaching: Criminology, Criminal Investigations, Capstone, Corrections, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Ethics, Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Patrol Operations, Private Security, and Terrorism. In 2010, Shaun became licensed as a Private Investigator by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Once licensed as an investigator, Shaun obtained extensive experience with mortgage fraud cases while performing work for United Guaranty and Kohler and Associates, LLC. Shaun’s experience includes work as a criminal investigator and, at one time, he was assigned as a contract investigator for the Public Defender’s Office in another county. Shaun also handled cases involving workers’ compensation fraud, surveillance operations, skip tracing, and private and public-sector preemployment background investigations.

I passed my CA Private Investigator test on March 20th! This book made my studying for this test so much easier than what I was given by BSIS. The book explains topics covered in the test with examples and citations of the applicable codes, (of which there are many), one needs to know in order to not only pass the test but operate as an effective and lawful P.I. As a retired Deputy Sheriff I had limited or no exposure to several very important codes prior to working for licensed P.I.’s and reading and studying this book. I feel that I was confident while taking and my passing the test was in no small part due to this book. The practice tests, (though not directly from the test), were very good at preparing me for the real thing. Thanks Shaun, for putting in the time to write this book in a way that was much easier to understand and learn the topics covered in the test. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to become a licensed CA P.I.
Anybody signed up for the. California Private Investigator Exam has seen the ads "guaranteeing" that you'll pass the test. After endless scrolling down, past the claims by people who allegedly used the materials to pass the test, you might learn how much the materials cost or you might not find out until you've filled in your credit card info. The owners of these companies play on your fears. Well, rest easy. This book and David Queen's book will work just fine. How do I know? These are the books I used and today I passed the test.
Great reference book. As an investigator, I have found that this is a good reference book for new and experienced investigators. I'm not sure why the price jumped from $19 up to $99 in less than 5 months.
This book is the best! I passed no problem, and I saw clearly where I would have messed up on the test had I not studied this book. The study guide given by BSIS and the Mometrix flashcard system did nothing to prepare me. The flashcard system was too all over the place and irrelevant for the most part. The California Legal Investigator covered everything needed for the California test and even helped me figure out how to correctly answer the questions that were confusing or that I didn't know the answer to. THANK YOU!!!! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
I'm working on a novel about a detective agency in Pasadena. California and this is just the book I need to give verisimilitude to the writing.
July 15, 2014, I passed the PI exam. In large part, I was successful because of Sean’s book and the online Simulator he offers on his website. In addition, I purchased the Private Investigator’s Legal Manual by David Queen, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Private Investigating by Steven Brown, and watched countless You Tube PI videos. I would recommend reading Sean’s book, Queen’s and Brown’s books, watching You Tube videos, and then once you’re confident in your depth of knowledge, test yourself with the Simulator. Each area I tested weak, I studied over and over. I have a corporate investigations background, and I do not feel my lack of law enforcement experience limited me. I studied for approximately 6 to 8 months. I would highly recommend (if you do order the Simulator, which is for 30 days) that you sit for the exam as soon as possible after the 30-day expiration. (And, to the grammar police, yes, there are grammatical errors in Sean’s book and Simulator.)
When I was informed of this book Mr. Sundahl had just completed and published on Kindle eBooks, I was very excited to read the book because I had taken his online preparation course for the P.I. and found it to be of great value in preparing for my state exam. I knew I could read this book to further my study. I purchased the book for a surprisingly next to nothing price and was ecstatic because it clarified and confirmed information previously studied at an easy to read and understand guide with great examples. The book is very informational and helpful. Thanks Mr. Sundahl, great book and would definitely recommend it to anyone preparing for the State P.I. Exam....Highly recommended. Sincerely, N. Davis
