Equal parts fascinating and heartbreaking, Ms. Schull's book is one of the few books I've read recently that made me feel like a different person after I finished reading. Though her style is overall very neutral, the simple facts she assembles about the history of the gambling industry constitute the most devastating critique of modern capitalism I've ever read, and forced me to rethink a lot of my attitudes about choice and public policy.But don't mistake this book for any kind of political screed or polemic. It's more like a real-life version of the first third of Ocean's 11, except instead of explaining casino security systems, she's explaining the games themselves. And what games! Through decades of trial and error, game designers have learned more about human psychology than a million studies of bored undergraduates could ever hope to reveal. Mind control may be an overstatement, but after you read the words of the gamblers themselves you'll have no doubt that machine gambling exploits our natural risk preferences and emotions so effectively that many of the people held in its sway have essentially stopped making choices, being unable to satisfy their longings in any way other than continued attachment to a slot or video poker machine.Ms. Schull does not stop there. She takes the reader further, examining the financial structure of the gaming industry, the mindset of key players in the industry, and the uneasy relationship between the industry and regulators, all supported by an impressively thorough set of sources and original research of her own.To her credit, there is no call to action, no indictment of the industry, though her views on the morality of the gaming industry are not exactly hidden. Rather, the reader is left with a vexing set of questions. What to do about the current trend towards legalizing and liberalizing gambling restrictions? What other industries are operating in a similar way (processed food, I'm looking at you)? Does regulation do any good, or does it simply serve to protect incumbent players so long as government gets its cut of the wealth that the industry extracts from players?The answers, sadly, remain elusive.

I found this book profoundly interesting. It is not an easy read, but that is more, I believe, due to the complexity of the concepts with which the author is dealing, rather than his prose style, which I find very clear and fluid.The book's emphasis is on the rise of the digital gambling machine, particularly "slots", which account for such a huge portion of modern casino revenues (and profits). The author examines the design and construction of the machines, their interaction with their users, and how this interaction leads to the formation or enhancement of gambling addictions.This is no hackneyed piece of academic research. The author spent many months with "boots on the ground" in Las Vegas casinos and machine manufacturing centers, trying to develop a comprehensive understanding of the forces at play in the modern human-machine interaction. I believe he has succeeded admirably. His explanations of what is really happening in the gambler's mind- and how the machine plays to those cerebral patterns- is profound and much different from conventional thought.If you want to understand what makes casino gamblers tick, and how the gambling industry takes advantage of every nuance of the gambler's psyche, this is a wonderful read. It should not be rushed through, but savored. Highly recommended, and ground-breaking research, compellingly presented.A few reviewers have complained that this book is difficult to read. They criticize the author's writing style, declaim his density of style. Sorry, I don't buy any of that. This is wonderfully written

I'm only about a third of the way through, but the book is an eye-opener. The author has done some incredible research relating to the deliberate programming and manipulation of both the gambling machines and the environments in which they are placed. I'm looking forward to finishing the book. It's interesting to draw comparisons between the gambling machines (and the psychology behind their development) and the smart phones that people just can't seem to set down.

I could not put this down and read it in a few long sittings, not unlike the long sittings of the people sitting on stools at casinos that are the source material of much of this book. I found it interesting, enlightening and depressing in places. Whether you play slot machines or not, you'll never look at them the same way after reading this book.My only gripe (and this is not really a gripe) is that (in at least the Kindle version) almost half of the book is taken up by notes. I was reading it and enjoying every page and thinking I still had about half a book left and then I got to 53% on the Kindle and it said I was nearing the end of the book. It was so well written that I would have liked to have read more.

I have been gambling for over 30 years. I have almost never played the slot machines. After reading this book I never will in the future.Through years of careful research the author details how slot machines have been designed to extract money from slot players through extensive yet covert psychological manipulation. The techniques are based on the theories of B.F. Skinner and go to a truly unbelievable level. I never imagined the sophistication of the science being applied here. Also examined are the players themselves who through interviews with the author describe how they are lulled into what they call the "machine zone". This is a place where the player enters into a state they describe as similar to suspended animation. The player shuts out everything around him or her and focuses on continuing to play solely to stay in that zone hour after hour.There's more in this book than I have time to write about here. This book is based on thorough, level headed and objective research. It will open your eyes to what slot machines and the people who are involved with every aspect of them are all about.

I've consistently found that these "...For Dummies" books are formulaic but helpful and well done. I got into real estate a bit many years ago but have forgotten a lot. I was confident that this book would be a good choice for bringing me up to speed again, and I was not disappointed. There are many good real estate books on the market which readers might subsequently consider if choosing to seek more depth and detail, but, if one simply wants to ask--and answer--the question, "Could real estate investing be for me?" this book provides a helpful--and most importantly--honest set of answers. The authors aren't trying to sell the reader anything. No schemes here, just the facts.

I expected the book to be light and contain mostly common sense advice. 1/4 into it, I realized it's more in-depth and does contain lots of good info.

The advice in the book seems somewhat basic but that's the premise of "....for dummies" series. This is a wonderful book. It is a classic. Use it to enhance and bring out your creativity prior to learning an art skill.

Published in 2002, it is alsoa workbook where you go through the different exercises over a period of 12 weeks or three months. I did all the exercises, including the morning pages. It shifted me as a person as well as helped me acknowledge the creative side of who I am. It’s really freed out some of my inner wounds and also helped me to feel much more liberated and be more creative in my personal and professional life.I recommend this book to all people, even those who don’t think that they’re creative because really, when we allow our inner child to come out and play, we have much more joy in our lives and this will allow us to be creative in other areas in our personal and professional life.Whatever job that you are in, you may think it does not involve creativity. You’ll be wrong. There are elements of creativity in everything that we do. Be a fuller person so that you are just much more integrated with all that you are so that you reach your fullest potential.

I loved it! I decided to actually follow the guidelines for the book - one chapter a week, doing the written exercises, the morning pages, the artist day..and I stuck to it. That is not usual for me, but I decided to give it a try..and it worked! I still do not go to my studio as often as I should and I am still not as disciplined as I should be..but it doesn't bother me as much and I keep to the thought that this should be fun...and I have more fun! The side effect that I had completely not anticipated at all, was that I lost 25 pounds over the 16 weeks (16 chapters) and I wasn't even trying. Doing the written exercises, thinking through the material, remembering things, and writing morning pages, reduced anxiety and stress and I guess I just ate less. That made me feel good, and good feelings kept building, so, I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to try a 16week course to reexamine your life journey and pursue a more creative life ahead. I have now bought this book for so many friends..but it really doesn't do the magic unless you put the time into it. So, if you buy it, agree to all the exercises, or it is just another self-help book that will not sink in. Good luck!

I bought this as a gift and haven't heard how she liked it. I loved it, as did my niece when i gave it to her a few years ago. However, although I expected the anniversary edition to be especially nice it actually wasn't as nice as the original and I regretted choosing it.

Even though it’s a bit too spiritual for me, honestly I almost quit on the book after reading the intro. and I was really rather skeptical about how this book would help me. It sounded a bit corny like self help book for artist. Like chicken soap for the artist soul.But getting past that and actually getting into doing the assignments and homework the book ask that you do week after week. I found the book was really helpful. I guess its like anything else where you get what you put in out of it and it’s different for everyone.I read somewhere that this book might have come out too soon for its own good. I think that if had added what we know today about neurology and how the brain works, instead of the spiritual stuff it would have been better off.I have recommended this book to others (artist friends) and have had moments where I felt I needed to reread a curtain part or do a curtain writing task again. Underneath the things that turned me off, there really are some priceless gems within the pages. And if you make it too the end of the 12 weeks you’ll be glad you did.But depending on who you are and how many issues you might have (rough childhood, stuff thats happen to you in the past) I recommend this book with a bit a caution. This book causes you to face a lot of things. So just be ready for that.

This is a fantastic book if you are looking for creative direction in your life. We have so many ways we sabotage our creative desires whether it's painting, singing, writing or building a boat, we end up never even considering them to be possible. "Doing" this book can change your life. I say doing because it's a 12 chapter/ 12 week learning process through writing in a daily journal and absorbing the weekly observations and lessons in each chapter. It can change your life, it did mine. Julia has a great saying, "jump and the net will be there." Give it a try, you don't have anything to loose.

Often we put that part form of intelligence closer to that back of our minds, under utilizing this gift we all have. Ms. Cameron has brilliantly designed ways excersizes we can strengthen that unique part of our thought processes. One of her first and arguably most valuable excersizes, for simplicity we'll call them "morning notes" introduces even the most analytical of person to the stream of consciousness thought and the value of writing it down. Even the concept of an am routine supports a wellness that Ms. Cameron and her practices support. In many ways it's an abstract form of meditation ( writing down ones process of clearly the mind??). It could also be seen as a practice of mindfulness, taking that time first thing to be in the "here". There are other excersizes and suggestions that can re awaken the creativity we feel we may have lost or never had.This book is a staple for anyone who relies on their creative intelligence to live. For those who don't feel as strongly, experiment with the idea of better developing these skills, I strongly believe you will surprize yourself with results that are unique to you and each situation they effect your life.She also wrote a book to help instill and strengthen creativity and its value in all area of life. Such a skill is invaluable to learn early in life!

Benita A. Blachman, Ph.D., is a professor in the Reading and Language Arts Department and Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Learning Disabilities in the School of Education at Syracuse University. She also holds a courtesy appointment in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department. She has a doctoral degree in educational psychology from the University of Connecticut and is a former special education teacher, reading specialist, and learning disabilities consultant. She has published extensively in the area of early literacy, focusing her research on early intervention to prevent reading failure and on the factors that predict reading achievement. Dr. Blachman is currently directing a project at Syracuse University (in collaboration with researchers at Yale Medical School and the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center) funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to investigate the influence of intensive reading intervention on patterns of brain activation in young children. Dr. Blachman has served on the professional advisory boards of the National Center for Learning Disabilities, the National Dyslexia Research Foundation, and the Neuhaus Center. Her edited book Foundations of Reading Acquisition and Dyslexia: Implications for Early Intervention was published recently by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Eileen Wynne Ball, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), where she was the recipient of two major teaching awards. She has a doctoral degree in education from Syracuse University, where she also earned a master's degree in urban education. Before joining the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Ball received a second master's degree from Northeastern Illinois University and taught at Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois; she also taught at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, where she created and coordinated Le Moyne's program for special education teachers. Prior to her university work, Dr. Ball was an urban classroom teacher for 12 years. In Chicago, she directed and taught in The Parents School, an early model in alternative urban education, and she continues to do educational consulting nationally. Her research in phonological awareness has won her grants and fellowships from the National Dyslexia Research Association, the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, and the Spencer Foundation. Dr. Ball is returning to UIC after completing another 2 years as a full-time third-grade classroom teacher during which she deepened her belief that classroom practices and classroom teachers must inform educational research. Rochella Black, M.S., has been a kindergarten teacher, first-grade teacher, and special education resource teacher for 24 years, teaching in both the inner-city schools of Syracuse, New York, and the suburban schools in Northport-East Northport, New York. Over the years, she has also served as a private tutor for students of all ages who were experiencing difficulty learning to read. In addition, Ms. Black was the project coordinator of the large-scale kindergarten and first-grade reading research project directed by Dr. Blachman during which the Road to the Code manual was developed and evaluated. She has presented numerous seminars and in-service courses for teachers on the effectiveness of specific activities for developing phonological awareness in children at the beginning stages of reading. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in social studies and two master's degrees from Syracuse University in elementary education and special education with a specialization in learning disabilities. Her publications have appeared in Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Darlene M. Tangel, Ph.D., is Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Reading and Language Arts Department at Syracuse University. She has taught graduate courses in learning disabilities and in language disorders at Syracuse University and has been a reading specialist in the Oriskany Public Schools for more than 20 years, where she also serves as the Chair of Special Education and the Chair of Preschool Special Education. Her research interests include early reading acquisition and invented spelling, alternative reading curricula for children at risk for reading failure, and adult literacy. She has developed training materials for the American Federation of Teachers and has extensive experience conducting teacher training workshops. The focus of these workshops is translating research into practical application for classroom use. Her most recent publications have appeared in the Journal of Reading Behavior and Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Drs. Tangel and Blachman were awarded the Dina Feitelson Research Award by the International Reading Association for their research on invented spelling.

Hmmm, it's hard for me to give an honest, concrete rating to this because I've only been using it for two months... but for those interested, here's my input. I volunteer with first graders at a school where most students speak a language other than English at home. Their alphabet is a bit different, so vowel sounds vary. Some kids also have ADD/ADHD issues, so staying on subject can be difficult. For this reason, I like the book because the activities switch constantly so the students don't get bored. Some activities can be monotonous, or seem Really Basic, but these students who are challenged in phonetics still don't completely understand that (for example), the word "BIG" has THREE sounds: b, i, and g. They see the first two letters as one sound. So, there is a LOT of repetitiveness in separating the sounds, and we do this twice a week. I've been using this book and the material components for about 2 months, and it seems to be working pretty well. I am excited to see the progress as we keep moving forward, and if there are any changes, I'm happy to update.

When you are a parent, trying to help your child catch up on language development, this book is a wonderful tool for dispensing practical exercises. You do not have to have a Ph.D. or any special training to understand what to do as far as following the exercise instructions. Although the book was published for teachers or specialists, any parent can use this guide.

I really like this program for a kindergarten intervention. It is slow paced for those kids who need it. It is easy to follow and the materials in the back are easy to photocopy and use.

I am the parent of a 9 yo 3rd grader, recently diagnosed as dyslexic. Unable to get appropriate help from the school district, I have a tutor I am working with who suggested I use Road to the Code to help with phonemic awareness. It was very easy to follow and I was surprised how much my older child actually enjoyed the games. He recently finished the last lesson as has made significant progress with his short vowel sounds and letter recognition. He is also beginning to understand there is a logical "code" to attack words with. There is practically no skipping around a paragraph, looking for a "clue", like he was doing prior to this instruction. Now that he is on to more advanced curriculum, he sometimes asks to do some of the "Road to the Code" exercises for fun. I will definately use this program with my (non-dyslexic) kindergartener. The use of only the 8 most frequently used letters, the repetition, and variety of exercises are highly effective and simple. All materials are very low cost and easy to make. I wish they would have used this for him in kindergarten!!!!!

Straight forward, easy to use. My first graders were very receptive to the 1:1 tasks from this program.

It is exactly what I needed to help my students become great readers!

Blachman knows her field. The book is full of lots of good ideas but needs some study and work on the part of the teacher. Well worth the effort to go the extra mile.

Carmen Lomas Garza is a painter and children's book illustrator who does large-scale paintings based on her life growing up Mexican-American in Texas in the 1950s. Her paintings illustrate moments from her childhood, such as family meals and holidays. I saw one of her large paintings in the children's wing of a hospital where I had taken my 3-year-old for a checkup, and did a little research on her and found her books. My kid loves them; she loves to look at all the details in the illustrations and imagine what each of the people's names are and what their relationships are to each other. To be clear, these are not really storybooks: There's no plot or dialogue. Each page is a different illustration of a moment in the author's childhood, with a little bit of text from the author explaining what's going on in the picture. Parents should be aware that these are realistic depictions of childhood in the 50s and there is some very slightly graphic content, for example her uncle bringing a freshly killed rabbit into the kitchen to cook for dinner, a picture that includes a little blood from the rabbit. But mostly these are pictures celebrating family.

This book has lovely illustrations and is written in both Spanish and English. It is probably best suited for a high school Spanish class to enrich reading and culture. I bought it to use in an ESL class at the elementary level but it is clearly not suited for young children.

Such beautiful pictures in this book! Love everything about this book! So relatable to our family! Adorable and so good for a bilingual home!!! Let's keep our language alive by teaching our kiddos how to read Spanish too!

We love this book! It's not for children who don't like wordy passages, but the pictures are detailed and reminiscent of my own upbringing. I loved having a chance to talk about la llarona with my kids! Not for the faint of heart, or ultra PC parent.

I used this book, along with Family Pictures, during a personal narrative writing unit when student-teaching third grade at a Spanish/English bilingual school. The majority of the children were immigrants from Mexico and they found these books engaging and easy to relate to. I think it was powerful for them to see experiences like their own in a published format. We studied the way the author described small events from her life, then the students each wrote three short personal narratives based on small events from their lives. Finally they each chose one piece, translated it so that it was in both English and Spanish (like the mentor texts), and illustrated it. Then we bound all of the stories together into one book and made a photocopy of the book for each student. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the work they'd done and they really felt like published authors at the end.

The paintings in this book are so beautiful and full and tell so much. You can see grandmothers rocking babies, children playing with each other, every little detail so sharply rendered. Look at the plates of empanadas in the kitchen and the family gathered for a backyard party. The honest, personal text--given in both English and Spanish--make this perfect. Great for anyone who wants to learn about family life as well as another culture. My[...] daughter loves to pore over these pictures. Highly recommended!

These books are great. They are bilingual (Spanish/English), collections of short memoirs from the author's experience. I have used these books for a variety of purposes, including as mentor texts with both young children and adults who are learning to write in both languages. They are uniquely American.

Garza creates the world of a Mexican-heritage family living in Texas. She captures the closeness of family life and the colorful beauty of the culture and landscape. The bilingual component helped me improve my Spanish vocabulary, and the drawings delighted me. As more and more people speak Spanish, the culture of the U.S. benefits from the language, ideas and art brought from Latin heritage into everyday life. This book is great for children and as something families can read together.
