Very attention riveting story, held me to the end, surprised me many times. I wish there was another novel in this series, I really like the characters

I work for a small, plaintiff's law firm and after I read The Professor, I bought copies for both of the attorneys at our firm. I purchased copies of Between Black and White (BB&#) for them before I ever read it - I suspected it would be very good. When you live in or around Little Rock, Arkansas, you understand what Pulaski Tennessee, goes through. The first thing people think when Little Rock comes up, is the integration crises of 1959. The interesting thing is that Pulaski, Tennessee, and Pulaski County, Arkansas, where Little Rock is located, are both named for Polish Count Casimir Pulaski. Having said that, I strongly encourage you to read The Professor before you read BB&W, it will give you background on the characters and the action. I started reading this book Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. and I didn't take off my PJs, didn't go get my mail, didn't eat a bite of anything. I drank two cups of coffee and fixed myself a glass of Coke. I was just about there when my son and his wife came over. They stayed no more than 30 minutes and left. I immediately returned to my book and at 9:00 p.m. closed it - finished. As a 5 year old boy, Bo Haynes watched as his dad was hung by 10 members of the Ku Klux Klan. Although he knew who one of the men was, because he was so accustomed to hearing his voice, the Sheriff said he couldn't take the word of a 5 year old boy about the man's voice. Point to remember. Before his dad walked out into the night to face what he knew was coming, he made his son promise, among other things he would take care of his momma (Point to remember), and he would make something of himself. The next morning his momma was gone and he never saw her again. Sports, football in particular, a blown out knee, and a law professor challenged him to do what he promised his daddy he would do. He graduated from Alabama School of Law and returned to Pulaski, Tennessee, to put the men who hanged his daddy in jail. There you have the plot of the book, it's the twists and turns that make it interesting. I had an idea how it would turn out but boy was I wrong. I didn't see those two coming, the brother and sister, the boy and his "daddy" - nope those were complete surprises. Block some time out when you start this book because you won't want to quit reading it until your finish it.

Between Black and White is a great follow-up book to The Professor, picking up where The Professor left off. The 1960s were difficult times in the South and old ways were hard to let go of even for those who knew they were wrong. Being originally from Lawrence County, the characters and places were recognizable and real. I'm hopeful there will be another book continuing on Tom McMurtrie and Rick Drake's legal defense of those whose case seem already lost. My husband was a "country" lawyer and I a legal assistant so I can relate to the difficulty of defending those who most had already convicted before trial. Congratulations, Robert Bailey on another great read.

This is the second legal thriller involving Retired law professor Tom McMurtrie and his partner (and former student) Rick Drake. I really enjoyed the first book in this series The Professor (McMurtrie and Drake Legal Thrillers) and looked forward to reading this book when I had the chance. In this book, another former student, Bo Haynes, is arrested for the murder of a former leader of the KKK, a person that Bo had often accused of murdering his father in a hate crime years earlier – a crime he had witnessed as a small child. The evidence seems overwhelming and Tom and Rick agree to defend Haynes in this major criminal case. The story is excellent – you won’t get any spoilers from me, but the twists and turns go right to the end – with a couple huge plot twists that I can’t say I didn’t see coming, but were skillfully brought forward in a way that was totally satisfying. If you are a big college football fan you’ll love the references to football – I’m not, but it sure didn’t interfere with the story line. I can’t wait until the next installment comes out.

I enjoyed the first book by Robert Bailey, "The Professor". Being the first book in a series, there was a lot of character building but the story was good. "Between Black and White" took this series to a whole different level! It involves a murder case, a black male accused of killing a former klansmen in Pulaski, Tennessee. There is suspense, danger and twists and turns you never see coming. I highly recommend "Between Black and White" as it depicts a "true 21st Century American South" where the ancient lines that were drawn in the 1950's still exist....but they are not respected as they were: and when it's all said and done, the truth is more important than all else.

I am a big fan of Robert Daily......into his third book of this series and look forward to the new one coming out. The Professor, Between Black and White and now The Last Trial have all left me wanting more. The books are "stand alone" for the most part but the story has the same characters and really should be followed to get the full impact of the situation. Tom McMurtrie is someone I can relate to......old enough to know better but does it anyway. After reading all of Scott Pratt's books this series by Daily is one I am enjoying. Only drawback is knowing that Tom is no loser!

I gave this book 4 Stars because I really enjoyed it. There were some parts of the story that I found rather offensive, such as the repeated use of the "N" word. There was also stereotypical verbiage I found annoying, like the use of the word "dog" by African American men. However, other than those nauseous little peeves, the book was a very good read. The story was fast-paced, and the characters were somewhat developed and believable. I really appreciated all the twists and turns in the plot, along with the authentic "whodunit" theme. That said, good job Robert Bailey!

#902,161 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I teach a low-intermediate adult ESL writing class of mostly young Chinese men (late teens to early twenties). On the Friday of the Chinese New Year week, I read this book to them. Most of them were a bit homesick, missing for the first time their families, traditional food, gifts and visits with friends. They had worked hard all week, so I had them relax during the last half-hour of the last class. They commented on the illustrations, read the Chinese characters on the posters by the front doors in the illustrations, debated the correct way to say the characters' names - I obviously wasn't saying them right :>)- and got very quiet as the story wound down to the bittersweet end. They talked about the various customs rendered in the story. We created vocabulary lists based on the illustrations, with a big focus on terms for house repairs. Being young men, they understood the story from the parents' point of view and the child Maomao. Their writing assignment based on the book was to create a different ending.

We like this book a lot. I have been trying to find good books that show a genuine aspect of Chinese people/life for my daughter. Many fail because they are over- Americanized or they are poorly written/illustrated. This one is real and also illustrates a few interesting pieces of Chinese life- the migrant lifestyle of many working class, some of the traditions of Chinese New Year but also the universal love of family and thrills of a small child. The illustrations are wonderful too and give a great sense of the home, the village, the dragon parade! My daughter, who is 3, loves this book so much that she loves to pretend to read it to me and has most of it memorized- that is how much she likes it! Highly recommended.

This book has a very nice narrative about a little girl and how her family celebrates Chinese New Year. Illustrations are very beautiful. It demonstrates good family value of togetherness, kindness and love. We started reading this book to our two year old grandson a month before this year's Lunar New Year, Jan. 23, 2012. He loves so much, he wants us to read to him many times a day since. He is fasinated of the whole story and the people and objects in the book. Especially, the lucky coin that the little girl found in her dumpling, this lucy coin has a very sweet ending which shows a daughter's love to her father, works far away from home, whom she only gets to see once a year. I highly recommend this book for children has Chinese heritage or any one interested in Asian culture. An excellent book to read over and over.

I love this book!

We have two children adopted from China. We buy them books that will give them knowledge about their country. We gave them this book for the Chinese New Year. It is particularly well written and they really enjoy it.

This is a beautiful book.

This book is so well written. It's a beautiful story of the reality of what lots of Chinese children deal with: one of their parents must live far from them for work. It combines Chinese culture with the global concepts of family and work.

A New Year's Reunion was written by Yu Li-Qiong who was born in Anqing, China and who currently lives in Nanjing. It tells the fictional story of a family united only once a year when the father, one of China's 100 million migrant workers, returns home for a few days to see his wife and daughter and celebrate the lunar new year. It's illustrated beautifully and is a cute story of a family's traditions, ending poignantly with the father saying goodbye to go back to work. I'm declaring this one a must-have book--not only does it describe well how a Chinese family celebrates the new year, it also shares how so many people in China live as migrant workers. Count on this book opening the door for great conversations with your kids about life in China and, possibly, questions about birth families if your child was adopted. Get ready.See my other reviews of Chinese New Year themed kids' books on my blog www(dot)myoverthinking(dot)com - look for the post dated January 25, 2012

A genuinely delightful book - I read it in a single sitting on evening where I'd already put aside three or four other novels as not quite right. The 1990s lesbian Portland milieu is beautifully observed and rendered - the writing is exquisite throughout without ever feeling fussy or overwrought; anybody who likes to read novels about characters we care deeply about will love this book. My only regret was that as I read the novel on my Kindle, I didn't get a copy with that gorgeous cat on the cover!

Grabs you by the shirt and pulls you headlong into a lively, marginalized community of women in Portland in the 1970's. This is a nostalgic love letter to that city in its gritty period - and also to the mysterious loves that a young woman can have - different, yet in the same body. There's lots of gentle mockery of the ironically bigoted "Lesbian Mafia,", and the constant migrations between and among young women finding and stabilizing their identities. And there's a special nativity portrait - I won't spoil it for you. The pace is brisk - you need to keep up! Lovely story - lovely perspectives, too. Worth more than a single read!

I fell so hard for this book. Beautiful writing, heartfelt storytelling, almost painfully-precise scene-painting of 90s Portland. I tore through it in two sleep-deprived days and didn't want it to end.

This is one of those books that I couldn't put down, yet didn't want to finish. If I could give it 4.7 stars, I would only because it dragged a little in part three, it could have used a little editing there, but I'm still in love with this book.

As a straight guy with several gay/queer women in our extended family, Ms Johnson’s beautifully written coming of age story about the nature of relationships and friends expanded my consciousness of stereo types and prejudice of anything “other.”

I really was wanting to love this book. In fact, I thought I would during the first part of it. Spoiler Alert—however, after Andy had the baby, all the 90’s Portland grunge charm was gone (which is what I was wanting to reconnect with in this book). Andy and Ryan living together just seemed too convenient and not realistic regarding how a lesbian would just accept a heterosexual man into her life as a replacement

Quirky but delightful coming of age at 24 as a lesbian in Portland Oregon. Belonging to the Lesbian Mafia, losing her lover and having multiple stands with a man and becoming pregnant. A very good first novel

For me, the story wove in and out of offering real interest. I loved Part 1 and put up with Part 2 until the last chapter. Then, it got interesting again.....and then just stopped.

Slow Medicine: The Way to Healing, by Victoria Sweet

Review

"Wonderful...often lyrical...subtle and insightful...Physicians would do well to learn this most important lesson about caring for patients from Sweet's book: 'Establishing the correct diagnoses and then getting them off all those unnecessary medications, with their side effects and adverse reactions, took a lot of time, but in the long run it saved way more money than it cost. It was slower but it was better.'" —The New York Times Book Review “Anybody considering medical school, or already toiling there, has to read this book. Everyone else should too… [Sweet’s] memoir of growing slowly into her calling is about learning not just to save lives but to make a life…Her personal odyssey is more stirring than any polemical manifesto could be.” —The Atlantic “Through the moving stories of patients and her experiences in medical school, [Sweet] explores how she found a compassionate way to care.  A thoughtful companion to one of today’s hot-button issues.” —Good Housekeeping   “An impassioned plea for a more humane system of healing — and a great read for everyone involved in medicine as patient or practitioner.” –San Francisco Chronicle   “Dr. Sweet writes as if she was sitting at our kitchen table, quietly and compassionately teaching about our bodies and our lives.” –New York Journal of Books   “[Sweet] offers an alternative to the tyranny of efficiency at the expense of healing.” –Good Times (Santa Cruz)   “Beautiful…[Sweet’s] prose is clear and direct, with a warmth and intelligence that engages the reader from the book’s first pages, a harrowing description of her father’s near-fatal hospital admission… A sober and lucid examination of what we lose when medicine is shaped by economics and not vocation, when it is informed by litigation and not reverence. One can only hope, and pray, that Sweet is not a prophet crying in the wilderness.” –St. Cloud Visitor "[A] master storyteller…highly readable… the sick will take comfort in this physician's warm, personal, knowledgeable approach.” —Kirkus Reviews  “Profoundly intimate...Sweet provides a strong and necessary tonic as health care, in all its complexities, remains at the center of the national conversation.” —Booklist  “Sound advice that all involved in health care should heed. [Slow Medicine] will appeal to both professional and lay readers.” —Library Journal  Praise for God's Hotel:“Transcendent . . . readable chapters go down like restorative sips of cool water, and its hard-core subversion cheers like a shot of gin . . . God’s Hotel [is] a tour de force.” —The New York Times “A most important book that raises fundamental questions about the nature of medicine in our time. It should be required reading for anyone interested in the ‘business’ of healthcare—and especially those interested in the humanity of healthcare.” —Oliver Sacks, M.D., author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and The Mind’s Eye

In her latest book, Slow Medicine: the way to healing, Dr. Victoria Sweet returns with her familiar style of humble, compelling prose and well-crafted anecdotes, artfully stitched together to form a tapestry of 40 years of medicine.Dr. Sweet’s gentle, but competent voice and comforting, familiar tone, is well suited to distill the complexity of medicine for the layperson. Her approach leaves the novice reader with an informative education, while offering the advanced practitioner the joy of running mental traps on the patients she employs to propel her story – or to simply nod along as she peels back the curtain of modern medicine, exposing the absurdity, chaos, and minutia that spawn from the unhappy modern marriage of economic efficiency and old-fashioned healing. She avoids excessive jargon and the swagger of inflated self-regard so common in those with her expertise, while her gift for descriptive parsimony draws us into the corners and corridors of hospitals and the lives of her patients with a gentle hand, leaving room for our own imagination and contemplation.Slow Medicine is a retrospective that fittingly resembles the medical definition: an examination of the patient’s history and lifestyle. Dr. Sweet guides us through a constellation of her life experiences that culminate in the illumination of some of the most pressing issues of modern medicine. She curates from her experiences such that we don’t merely watch her transformation with distant fascination, but are instead pulled into the examination ourselves, where we experience the power that slowness has to change many things, not the lease of which is the perspective of the observer. This perspective, gifted to us from such an experienced practitioner of medicine, is a fascinating body of work on its own accord. Slow Medicine is, however, far more than an autobiographical story marked by well-planted signposts of insight along some forgotten path of medicine; it is a narrative discovery, both personal and universal.Slow Medicine explores questions about life that transcend medicine without being pretentious, a testament to Dr. Sweet’s humility and authenticity, undoubtedly honed through her experience healing the long-suffering and forgotten souls of Laguna Honda Hospital.Accordingly, Slow Medicine is not a manifesto or a panacea for all of what ails medicine. Nor is it an unwieldy indictment of modern “fast” medicine. It does, however, propose that there is a different way, a “…way of seeing, doing, and being” that re-unites doctor and patient in the craft, art, and science of healing. She writes for the human reader, not just those in her craft. The story is hers but the message is for all, patients or practitioners - for those are the very boundaries she seeks to deconstruct. Slow Medicine will challenge the practitioner, inspire the patient, and remind us all that to heal is above all else, to be human.- Healthy Hildegard

Great read. Victoria Sweet delivers as both a medical historian and clinician who values slowing down and the value of understanding patients whole story. This book left me pondering how have we moved so far away from the physical exam and lasting doctor-patient relationships. Slow medicine is the medicine of the future.

I loved Victoria Sweet’s first book, God’s Hotel which I just “happened” upon at the library. I was excited to see she had written another book, Slow Medicine. I was more than willing to pay for it since the library didn’t have it. What a great writer and a wonderful storyteller. Sweet reminds us of how medicine used to be and how corporate practices,in an effort to make it more efficient have,in reality, made medicine inefficient. She weaves interesting cases, personalities, procedures, and a bit of history into a book you won’t want to end.

For me, perhaps the most perceptive moment of Dr. Victoria Sweet’s “Slow Medicine” was her definition of fast and slow and how the words, normally applied to food, relate to medicine. I finally got the drift of her book when I understood her adept transference of the terms. Fast, she states, implies modernity, excitement, and efficiency as opposed to slow --- behind the times, lumbering, and inefficient. At first glance, slow seems to be something undesirable. But years of rush and pressure, of wrong diagnoses, and wrong treatments, have promoted slow as a kind of antidote. Dr. Sweet has determined that correct diagnoses and treatment are the truly effective, efficient, sustainable, and humane ways of healing. Neither fast nor slow correctly defines the final product. But applied together, they are powerful methods of ensuring quality care. Her enlightening book is filled with case histories about physicians and their care of patients. Her prose is simple and direct. Her warmth and intelligence envelop the reader from the first pages. Her simple message is that medicine should be shaped by calling rather than by economics and by veneration instead of litigation.Dr. Sweet is a prize-winning historian with a Ph.D. along with her sterling reputation as a medical doctor. Sometimes referred to as subversive and evangelistic, she is dedicated to having fast and slow medicine meld together into a more intelligent and humane system of healing. She strikes me as being the type of physician we all long for but soon find to be elusive.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

I was very eager to start this book, I truly love the concept and support the idea of slow medicine. the book starts out excellent setting a stage as to why we need a change in our healthcare system. Chapter by chapter I kept waiting for some form of solution in all the stories but found none. What I heard were stories from a privilleged author who liked to point out how much better they were at medicine than others. At how much more attention to detail and caring they were but ran at the first sign of resistance to what they believed in. This is eveident when the the description of the pharmacist is given. The words can't hide how much the author loathes her colleagues in other disciplines who most times and as two other accounts have given save her from death mistakes. Instead there's a pattern of running from those hard challenges. I hope you enjoy but this was not the journey I expected and that's fine, it's good to disagree and here the other side.

Must read for the students, medical residents and young generation of the physicians who will take our current, fast Medicine to the future, whch currently looks bleak...Very well written. You do not need read the entire book - one can find a lot of important insight in different chapters based on their clinical interests and past experience.
