Review

If your marriage isn't vertical, then it's just a matter of time before your relationship will pay the price. Or...you could read this book and transform your marriage into a page-turning, smoking-hot, this-is-more-like-it love story. Your call. (Dr. Tim Kimmel, author of Grace Filled Marriage)We athletes invest countless hours of time and money into giving ourselves the greatest chance of not just success but greatness. Taking the time to read this book will do for your marriage what all great athletes do for their careers--find the people who are the absolute best at what they do and allow them to pour into every part of you as an athlete. This book will radically change you as a person and a partner, and, like Tiffany and me, you'll become a part of a marriage that thrives because of these teachings and principles. If you want your marriage to be different, Vertical Marriage by Dave and Ann Wilson is the difference maker. (Dan and Tiffany Orlovsky, twelve-year NFL quarterback and seven-year member of the Detroit Lions (Dan and Tiffany have the honor of having been married by Dave))I think what I love most about my friends Dave and Ann Wilson is their honesty, coupled with their passion for couples to experience marriage as God intends it. Wherever you are in your relationship, Vertical Marriage will move you closer together as you learn how to go vertical together. (Bob Lepine, cohost of FamilyLife Today)Vertical Marriage will provide a virtually life-changing message for all couples seeking God's presence in their marriage. It's a very entertaining read packed with real-life experiences that all married couples can relate to. Dave and Ann Wilson provide dual perspectives that blend seamlessly into the singular concept of a vertical marriage. (Jim Caldwell, seven-year NFL head coach and two-time Super Bowl champion)Dave and Ann Wilson have a unique ability to authentically reveal their scars, glorifying God as the centerpiece throughout the process. Their impact on our marriage is immeasurable, and we are eternally grateful for both of them. (Drew and Kristin Stanton, Cleveland Browns quarterback)One of the reasons I have a healthy marriage today is because of how Pastor Dave and Ann Wilson poured into me as a teenager. As someone who spent my high school years in their church, they modeled an authentic and persevering marriage centered on Christ. Dave and Ann are transparent, wise, and relatable. You will get to be a 'fly on the wall' as they share their stories and hard-won insight. Vertical Marriageis not about trying harder; it's about trying again. I'm so glad they tried again and again. Our marriage shapes future generations. Let this book encourage you, no matter what season you're in. (Esther Fleece Allen, speaker and author of No More Faking Fine)It's rare to have a great marriage. It's rare to be a great communicator. Put those things together, and you have the right book for the right person from the right authors. I'm a fan of Dave and Ann Wilson and Vertical Marriage. They have helped me, and they will help you too. (Brian Tome, senior pastor of Crossroads Church, Cincinnati, Ohio)My favorite marriage speakers finally wrote a book--one I've been asking them to write since I first heard them speak on stage almost ten years ago. The Wilsons are the real deal, and reading Vertical Marriage gives us a peek into their life and marriage, but not in a stuffy Christian way where you listen to some pastor who doesn't really let you into their real world. This book isn't like others that seem far from obtainable. You'll get practical advice and wisdom from a couple who has gone the distance and are willing to help you learn from their mistakes so you don't make them. This book will encourage you and may even leave you feeling good about where you're at in your marriage, not just overwhelm you with depressing news and more work to do. (Craig Gross, founder of XXXchurch.com)Dave and Ann Wilson are amazing at breaking down how and why to do marriage right. Not only is the information in Vertical Marriage legit, but it works. They know how to make it fun. I'm also amazed that Dave finally sat still long enough to write it all down! (Michael Jr, comedian and author of The Parts We Play)Dave and Ann Wilson have been gifted by God to speak into the hearts of marriages across this country. We've been blessed to sit under and learn relationship principles from the Wilsons for three years, and we still seek their counsel today. What a blessing Vertical Marriage will be to countless couples who will experience in print what so many have experienced in person through their church, their speaking ministry, and their ministry as chaplains for the Detroit Lions for more than thirty years. Their transparency, commitment to biblical marriage, and pertinent stories will convict, challenge, and encourage everyone who reads this book. (Jon and Jen Kitna, seventeen-year NFL quarterback and current high school head football coach)

"I don't love you anymore." How many spouses have heard that? I've heard the Wilson's story through the video series "The Art of Marriage". This book brings their struggles in marriage to the forefront. How often do couples give up when the going gets tough? Dave and Ann could have done that but didn't. Their story is a must read for any couple, whether struggling or not. I bought 5 copies and plan to give them away to couples who could use some help.

Love this book!! Having been a member of Kensington Church since 1994/1995, my husband and I have been hearing Dave and Ann teach on Marriage. We moved farther away from the now, main campus and tried many churches. My husband, the head of our family, still wanted to attend Kensington, primarily because he liked Dave Wilson’s Teachings. So, we made the drive and have remained ever since. Dave spoke greatly to my husband’s heart, Ann to mine. Dave renewed our vows in 2003, for our 15 year anniversary.Reading this book has given us a glimpse into our now 30 years of marriage and all we have walked in and the importance of going Vertical first. Reading this book and listening to it on audible, reinforces what we have learned over the last 24 years and the awesome core of it-going Vertical!! 2 of our kids are engaged and are reading the book! I just purchased one for our son last night and he marries this summer! Our eldest daughter, in 2020. So, you see, their teachings have not only changed OUR marriage, they are changing our Legacy. This book and Dave and Ann speak not only into marriage, but into all relationships in general. We can only love people well, through the Vertical relationship with God, First. You will laugh, cry and be moved beyond words, at the REALness of their words. We strongly recommend VERTICAL MARRIAGE.

Dave and Ann are incredible! Their story (told beautifully in this book) has changed the way my wife and I live life, and pursue our marriage. I know many marriages have hit a wall, and are considering separation or divorce - even as they read this. Dave and Ann ask you to hold on, and keep reading. We agree.

Dave and Ann got my husband and I through some of our toughest moments so far. They are so real and this book explains so much on the change that can happen if you go vertical. My husband and I are thriving because of them and the impact they have made on us. I feel lucky to have Dave as our pastor and to have found them. Read this book whether you’re married, single, or divorced! It will change your life.

The most authentic and vulnerable relationships book I’ve ever read. They say things others would t dare to say...but should. From page one, it hooked me.

Insightful, funny and (most importantly) real. Ann and Dave share the ups & downs of their relationship in a meaningful and relatable way. It is really no secret - this book will change marriages!

We just got ours in the mail today and will be reading it together while on our family life marriage cruise in just a few short days. We cannot wait! Thanks Ann and Dave for investing in marriages we hope to one day share our story and invest as well.Much love and hugs!!!

Dave and Ann Wilson have been living dangerously "out there" for years. They are so refreshingly honest about their marriage failures that we can all relate to them. Vertical Marriage is not like any other marriage book you've ever read. You'll be laughing, crying, and blushing throughout the whole thing. But you won't put it down without being radically challenged to live Vertically in your own relationships.

I enjoy historical fiction, and this is among the best I've read. A long, languish, character driven novel, set in Europe up to and including the first world war. The story centres on a massively wealthy finance family of Jews, spread across Europe, and can only be based on none other than the Rothschilds.Long drawn in places, too many details in other places, and loose ends are my only complaints.

Historical Heaven, for any one who enjoys complex characters with individuality.Knowledge of gardening and finance of the era was fascinating!Would recommend to all as a great read.

Interesting

Good historical fiction about the Rothschilds and the Western World.

I enjoyed this family saga inspired by the Rothschild family. Since I haven’t read anything about the Rothschilds and the author didn’t give us an Afterword as to how closely she followed their lives, I can’t say how true this story was to theirs. It was very interesting that the family set up banks in most European capitals, and kept everything very strictly controlled by family members only in the administrative positions.Marriages were arranged, so Greta, in Vienna, was slated to marry her cousin, Albert, in London. They met each other on the day of the wedding. Greta is described as the fun-loving “wild child” of her family, and Albert was the serious, butterfly-hunting, usually dour, opposite. Obviously, we are treated to years of friction and mutual disdain. Little by little, an appreciation grows and, well, you know! The story going on in the background is the lead-up to World War I. In the beginning, Kaiser Wilhelm is the German leader, but upon his death, Hitler rises to power. The Goldbaums have two things affecting their lives. They’re Jewish, and they control most of the gold in Europe. The countries fighting Germany need money, which they borrow from Goldbaum banks. England is reluctant to be drawn into the conflict, and will need what the Goldbaum’s have if they are. Social life for the Goldbaums goes on almost as usual all during the saber-rattling.At last, America is drawn into the war. Lots of financial dealings are on the table. The Goldbaum main characters find themselves involved in all aspects of the battle, while the Goldbaum women hold the homefront intact in London. There is lots of gardening going on. Descriptions of the gardens are lyrical, and of the war, graphic. Up to the last 50 pages, one is not certain how the family will be at the end of the war. This is a comfortable, sometimes page-turning read. For lovers of historical fiction who are tired of the Romanovs, Victoria and Henry the VIII, this is a good one - interesting and different!

A powerful European family finds itself bowing under the weight of war. Family members will find themselves on opposite sides of the lines in ideology as well as geography, and they will face hardships unlike any they’ve ever experienced. Author Natasha Solomons offers readers a studied look at how war affects the rich and famous in her unnecessarily drawn-out novel House of Gold.In Austria, Greta Goldbaum ponders marriage—her own, that is. As a member of the influential Goldbaum family, Greta knows her lot in life is set. She’s expected to marry within the family to keep the name, and their Jewish heritage, intact. Marrying inside of the family also allows for all the money to stay in one place, and no one can deny that when it comes to money the world tips its hat to the Goldbaums.Greta isn’t so sure about what’s expected of her, however. She’s agreed to marry her distant cousin, Albert, from England, and she’ll have to leave her beloved Vienna for the damp English weather. She just hasn’t made up her mind yet about how much she likes Albert.Life in England brings a drastic change and, in some ways, a welcome one. Greta escapes her overbearing mother, for one thing. Also, despite missing home, she starts to feel freedom in her new country; the kind of freedom she didn’t feel in Austria. When Greta and Albert’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, her mother-in-law offers a distraction: a garden for Greta to call her own. Greta puts her attention and energy into it, and like a young seedling given the right space her marriage with Albert also begins to blossom.Even their budding romance can’t shade itself from the threat of World War I, which brings a whole host of complications. The greatest one comes in the monetary cost: war officials count on the resources the Goldbaum family can provide, even while discriminating against “common” Jews all in the same breath. The double standard makes Albert and some of his other cousins think twice about just where the money is going, but no one can doubt the power of currency. If it’s gone, the only thing that matters is that it’s been spent. The Goldbaums must do all they can to preserve their fortune or risk becoming destitute themselves.Author Natasha Solomons gives readers some pleasant tidbits about life as a member of the most elite level of society. The Goldbaums consume lavish meals. They travel in private transportation of every form. They own hothouses where teams of gardeners force flowers and fruits and vegetables to grow at the family’s pleasure, regardless of the season. However, the story itself meanders from topic to topic. Readers will go from scenes of Greta and Albert and the awkwardness of the first months of their semi-arranged marriage to scenes between senior Goldbaum men as they discuss politics and finance. Thrown into the mix are moments with Henri, a member of the French branch of the family as well as Otto, Greta’s brother, in Austria and then in England when he comes to visit. Albert’s brother, Clement, also features somewhat prominently for a while but then inexplicably gets relegated to the background until he almost disappears.Solomons interjects with a subplot about Karl, a beggar boy who eventually connects with one of the Goldbaums to show that war doesn’t care about bank balances; it devastates anyone. While Karl’s story offers a mild distraction from the other plot points, it doesn’t enhance the overall book. In fact, had Karl not been in the novel, the book wouldn’t have suffered in any way.The biggest challenge for readers will be the scope of the novel. They may wonder exactly what it is Solomons wants her target audience to glean from the book. An insipid end that brings the Goldbaums to two years before the end of World War I doesn’t offer any answers. The Goldbaums find themselves limping along in their every-day lives to survive the financial and emotional toll of the war, and readers who stick with the story to the end will find themselves frustrated with the lackluster conclusion. Those interested in historical fiction might find House of Gold interesting. Otherwise, I recommend readers Bypass it.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-This book sets out to reassure children: "Wherever you live, wherever you go, there are all kinds of families." As readers journey to the zoo with Nellie, Gus, and their family, they learn about where people live, what they eat, their habits and hobbies, and how their families are composed, including references to single parents and same-sex couples. The prose is unadorned and economical, but gentle, and perfect for very young children. Digitally created images are bright and welcoming and feature a host of multicultural characters and diverse families. The conversations between Nellie and Gus featured in speech bubbles alongside the illustrations sweetly reinforce the messages in the broader text: "Right, Gus. Don't worry. I can be your big sister and your friend. And I am!" This book should find a place in classroom libraries, guidance offices, and public libraries.-Alison Donnelly, Mississippi Valley Library District, Collinsville, ILα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

This colorful, large-format picture book looks at families, all kinds of families, and all kinds of diversity. Families live in different places, eat different foods, and enjoy doing different things together. They have different numbers of children, who might be adopted, and different combinations of mothers and fathers, who might get divorced and possibly remarry. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents, and pets are family, too. The color of different family members’ hair, eyes, and skin may vary. They may sometimes be mad or sad, but families really do love one another. Teachers and parents looking for a picture book about diverse families will find this an obvious choice, with its clearly written, inclusive text and its large, cheerful illustrations, which show up well from a distance. At the same time, some will be put off by the book’s tone, which is unswervingly upbeat and purposeful. Still, a useful addition to library collections. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Very inclusive and matter-of-fact. Love that it includes same-sex parents, single parents, foster parents, separated/divorced parents, kids that are born or adopted into families, kids who live with relatives, etc etc without any sort of judgement. Love that it addresses how some families all look similar and some don't. Love that the family featured is interracial- like ours- since that is weirdly not present in a lot of books. Great illustrations, perfect for toddlers to get involved in the book and point out all of the different families, places, animals, and objects (my 1.5 year old loves doing this). I wish it came in Spanish, but otherwise no complaints. So easy to build upon the text to talk about families of all structures and nuances.

Another great book by this author! This book covers all different kinds of family structures -- including our own -- which is what we were hoping for. One thing I'd change is that there is a line that says "Children are born into their families or adopted into their families." I've recently learned that sometimes children who were adopted don't realize that they were born FIRST, and THEN they were adopted. I wish that sentence made it more clear that all children are born, and didn't set it up as an either/or (born/adopted). Even a very small change might help clarify this, like: "Children are born into their families or adopted into their families after they're born."There's another page where the author doesn't quite hit the nail on the head -- the sentence is, "Some children live with their mommy part of the the time and with their daddy part of the time." While that's certainly true, I'd make this even more inclusive by rephrasing it to "Some children live with one parent part of the the time and with their other parent part of the time." I know of some same-sex couples who split custody of their children, so this revised sentence would also include them. These are fairly picky points. Overall, I really do like this book, as well as others by this author.

Very culturally sensitive book. Though I had to leave out a couple of sentences due to regulations in my county, the pictures could have brought about conversations... AND allowing EVERY child to feel that their on family is normal. A family is a group of people who love and care for you, whether it is traditional, adoptive, foster, single parent, step parent, or any other combination out there. My K and 1st graders really enjoyed the story and were able to draw their own families doing things they love.

A bit wordy and not rhyming or such so we will see how my little one likes it, but this book does a wonderful job of being very inclusive. I have friends with triplets, two mommies, single parent, adopted child/ren, interracial families and other family types/qualities that are hard to find in a childrens book. This book has everything.

Perfect for helping children to understand concept of today's families. Nice and not preachy. Started a terrific conversation in the classroom with the kids sharing and accepting!

The book is a little long and wordy. It is a great book for opening the conversation about diversity and the differences between families no matter where they live or who makes up their family.

Great book to familiarize your children about all the different kinds of families you see today. You’ll see and/or read about multiracial parents, same sex parents, foster parents, single parents, step-parents, adoptive, and birth parents. Wonderful book! Wish there were more books like this.

We got this for a five year old who was really having trouble with understanding the concept of not only who is in the family but also who is not, and it was very very helpful and a delightful read. Examines nontraditional families, twins, different races... And each page has tons of adorable animals that the five year old turned into a game to see who could find the most.
