ABOUT THE TRANSLATORSGia-fu Feng was born in Shanghai in 1919, was educated in China, and came to the United States in 1947 to study comparative religion.  He held a BA from Peking University and an MA from the University of Pennsylvania.  He taught at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and directed Stillpoint Foundation, a Taoist community in Colorado.  Gia-fu Feng died in 1985.Jane English, whose photographs from the integral part of the book, holds a BA from Mount Holyoke College and received her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in experimental high energy particle physics.  In 1985 she found her own publishing business, Earth Heart.  Her books and calendars include Different Doorway: Adventures of Caesarean Born, Mount Shasta: Where Heaven and Earth Meet (with Jenny Cole) and the yearly Tao Te Ching Calendar.  She was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1942.Chuang Tsu/ Inner Chapter (1974), a companion volume to Lao Tsu/ Tao Te Ching, is a direct outcome of the successful collaboration between Gia-fu Feng and Jane English on the Tao Te Ching.

Whether one enjoys reading the Tao Te Ching depends on the extent to which one believes that the deepest truths are inexpressible in ordinary language. The philosopher Daniel Dannett has usefully coined the term “deepisms” to refer to sayings that one must meditate over to understand and that allow a plurality of meanings. Dennett refers to such phrases in a derogatory fashion because he does not think that these sayings point to deep truths which are beyond the power of human language. But there have been many modern philosophers, including Wittgenstein, who disagreed.If one does agree with Dennett you will find the Tao Te Ching largely meaningless because most of it is full of deepisms. In a more western context, if one finds the sayings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount inspiring and worthy of profound contemplation then one will probably find the Tao Te Ching similarly worthy of study.Obviously, one could read this book simply for cultural enrichment but if one is looking for spiritual guidance be prepared to thoroughly chew over the text if one wants it to be properly digested.

This is the book that introduced me to the Tao back in the 1960s. I was immediately much attracted to its contrarian and paradoxical nature. I can even recall being especially "enlightened" when reading Chapter XXXIII. (Lau uses old-fashioned Roman numerals.) I still have the Penguin Classics paperback from 1970 (5th printing) with its now yellowed pages. Here's that chapter as Lau expressed it:"He who knows others is clever;He who knows himself has discernment.He who overcomes others has force;He who overcomes himself is strong.He who knows contentment is rich;He who perseveres is a man of purpose;He who does not lose his station will endure;He who lives out his days has had a long life"I kind of liked the tautology in the last line, but now believe that "He who overcomes himself is strong" is an understatement.The "Center Tao" on the Web has the following as a word for word translation:"Knowledge of people is resourceful,Knowledge of self is honesty.Victory over others is power,Victory over self is striving.Being content is wealth.Striving to prevail is will.Not losing place is endurance.Dead, but not gone,This is longevity."Notice the contradictory sense in the last couplet: this is why something is always lost and/or gained in translation!Here's how the gifted Stephen Mitchell handles the chapter (from his books "Tao Te Ching" (2006) and "Tao Te Ching Lao Tzu: An Illustrated Journey" (1999):"Knowing others is intelligence;knowing yourself is true wisdom.Mastering others is strength;mastering yourself is true power.If you realize that you have enough,you are truly rich.If you stay in the centerand embrace death with your whole heart,you will endure forever."I like the "true wisdom" and "true power" of knowing and mastering yourself best.Lau's book includes a 46-page Introduction; two appendices, one on "The Problem of Authorship," the other on "The Nature of the Work"; a list of passages for comparison; a chronological table; a glossary and several pages of endnotes. Lau refers to the book as "the Lao Tzu" and writes "...in Chinese there is no linguistic distinction between the two and so it is impossible to know whether it is the man or the book that is referred to when the name `Lao Tzu' occurs." (p. 15)I want to add that if you're reading the Tao for the first time (or even the tenth) and find it a bit confusing and contradictory you are not alone. The exaggerations and understatements, the seeming contradictions and the sometimes outrageous claims fairly shock the intellect. But that is part of what the Tao is all about. Like Zen the "Lao Tzu" seeks to get us out of our ordinary minds and into a vaster, broader, more freewheeling and open-minded, more spontaneous grasp of things. And remember the Tao Te Ching is a poem and employs poetic devices to overcome the linear nature of prose. Therefore you should as a reader always consider that the denotative words you are reading may have multiple meanings and they may be being used symbolically. The famous "ten thousand things" can be much more than 10,000 or even less. They are "many." And the Way can be a path, a road or a way of life or something mysterious beyond all comprehension, or simply a wise rule of thumb. It can (and is) all of these and more.So to really appreciate "Lao Tzu" takes a bit of time. So take your time. Savor it. Come back to it. Read other translations. Read the commentaries. The Tao Te Ching is one of the "classic" Chinese texts of spirituality; traditionally, it was written by Lao Tzu (perhaps a legendary figure; the name means "Old Master" or even "Old Boy") in around the 6th or 5th century BCE. The "Tao" basically means "the Way." This 1963 edition includes a lengthy and useful Introduction by the translator.Here are some quotations from the book:"The way that can be spoken of is not the constant way; the name that can be named is not the constant name." Yet the way is revered and virtue honoured not because this is decreed by any authority but because it is natural for them to be treated so." I rooted for a specific positive ending, although figured it would be unlikely based on the direction of the narrative. I never could have predicted the resolution.WE ARE OKAY is a quiet story dripping with emotion. It's the type of book I know I will read and reread for deeper depth and understanding each time. I believe this may be one of those stories I reread every year or so, for the beauty of the words, story and message.If WE ARE OKAY sounds like your type of book, you will love it. Even if not now, there may be a time in your life where it speaks to you.

First, 2 things: This cover is absolutely stunning. & second, this is my first Nina LaCour novel and I have to say that I was blown away by this short, powerful novel.This story starts with Marin who, we know, is suffering from some kind of grief and afraid of being alone. But it's Christmas break at her university and since she has nowhere else to be she is staying at the dorms all by herself for a month or so. She half wants to/is half afraid of snuggling up in her bed and never getting up again. But her old friend Mabel is coming to visit for 3 days so she can't do that just yet.Mabel is a reminder of Marin's past. Marin hasn't returned any of Mabel's messages for months but now Mabel will be in the same room with her and she will have to deal with that past and with her lingering feelings for Mabel, whatever those may be.This is a short novel and not a lot happens because this is not a plot-driven book. But it packs a powerful punch emotionally. It's about grief, it's about dealing with finding out someone is not completely who thought you were, it's about dealing with loneliness, and love. And this book spoke to me. Gripped me. Such beautiful prose and such strong emotion.I will say that the reason I would not give this a full 5 stars is because there were some bits that struck as being somewhat unrealistic. Not that they could never happen, just that they probably don't often happen. But maybe I'm jaded. Who knows?

I gave this book 4.5 Stars but rounded up to 5 as it was closer to 5 than 4.This book seriously hit me with the feelings. It feels like it has been a LONG time since anything that I have read brought me tears. I liked the idea of this book and it was so beautifully crafted that it ended up being much more than I expected. I really FELT the Emerson quote that the author chose to use and feel like it is an important message for everyone (I am including the full quote here even though it was shortened a bit for the book):“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day. You shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” -Ralph Waldo EmersonI was surprised by the turn of events, though I did see a few small details coming. The ending was so lovely, it has left me feeling uplifted and satisfied with the future for these characters when I am typically left wanting so much more.

I liked this book, but I had a hard time staying interested. I actually read two books in between. I found the main character, Marin, almost forgettable, whiny, and kind of annoying. I felt bad for her friend Mabel, who kept trying so hard to get through to Marin. The words and imagery were beautiful, which is what I come to expect from Nina LaCour, but something left me feeling unsatisfied at the end of the book.I love Nina's other books and it saddened me that this one wasn't my cup of tea.

Was disappointed to find the 3 books were basically identical in the information they provided. The only differences were the patterns included in them. Not much difference between beginner and intermediate.

I have been crocheting for quite awhile but these are a good reference for when I can't remember how to do something or figure it out. I like the Kindle format because all my crochet patters are online now so I only need my yarn, needles and my tablet.

I am a 65 year old Grandma who just recently started buying from you and I guess I didn't read right, thought these were actually books, but then said digital, which I don't like, I am old school and love the feel of a real book in my hand, the smell of a new book opening.

Well written. Easy to follow. Provides great ideas for useful, handmade items. But then again I love to crochet so I'm just enjoying them!

Looks to have a lot of wonderful information whether you are a beginner or more advanced photographer.

Excellent book for the budding studio photographer. Great tips on lighting and posing. Covers all topics from equipment to post production.

This book is without a doubt one of the LEAST helpful books I have seen. It goes back immediately! Not only is the photography uninspiring, but the information contained is all but worthless ("there's a long tradition in the use of food.." "this playfully quizzical look suggests a good working relationship between model and photographer..." ) Far from being instructive, it reads more like stream-of-consciousness photo-babble from cover to cover. RUN - don't walk - away from this one!

I found that the book was very well presented. Only a small portion of it deals with taking pictures. The rest deals a lot with how to deal with all the other aspects of nude photography. I found this as an invaluable resource not just for nude photography but for all photography involving models. I especially enjoyed the sort of conversational approach he takes in his writing style.Overall I highly recommend this book, the only downside were the frightened looks of people who saw me watching it.

If you are seriously interested in taking photographs of beautiful naked models, then this is the kind of book you won't be able to put down. It's rammed full of insightful little tips and tricks and amusing anecdotes. Explaining everything in a coherent and concise manner, from how to approach potential models, right through to tweaking and correcting the final print, without ever becoming patronizing or overly techie.An exceptionally good read, a very useful reference book and a fine collection of pictures too. I'm sure I'll be returning to this fantastic book, time and time again.

I have all 3 of Rod's books. The first 2 were all about the information and were rather impersonal in his approach in showing you. This book rather has a very personal touch to it. Its like he is sitting with you explaining everything one on one. It is chuck full of information and a lifetime of experience. All you have to do is read and learn from it.Chris

Althogh I do not do nude photography, I found the material in this text a good summary of all aspects of nude as well as portrait photography. Very comprehensive and clearly written.

I thought that the book will examine the techniques in deep detail, hence the "Mastering" in the title, but I was wrong.The book is poor edited and has very vague information. Maybe it should take out the "Mastering" from the title and put a "Amateur".

I have just read this book cover to cover and colored it with copious highlighting on almost every page. It has been tremendously beneficial to me, and I recommend it to anyone who has a serious desire to improve their understanding of the language. Especially if you are the type that is not satisfied with the “just do it this way” approach most popular beginning grammars use and want to know why.I did deduct a star because it has been in print for some time and needs an erratum sheet to correct the many minor and careless typographical errors (examples: contractions §2.7, the missing rule §24.4c which is referred to in various footnotes such as footnote 1 p.155 but not appearing in the text, extra epsilon in footnote 1 p.159). Learning Greek is difficult enough without having to sort through them.

I teach Koine Greek to college students at a small liberal arts college using Mounce's Grammar. He often refers to this volume for more information. I finally ordered it and it's been very helpful. Most of my students neither need nor want a volume on morphology, but it has helped me in my own preparation. I do have the occasional student who genuinely enjoys languages and wants to geek out on morphology, so I recommend this volume.

I really enjoy this book. Very helpful in the formation of Greek words and the behavior of the language. In depth coverage of how and why Greek words form the way they do, probably more information than the beginner will need unless you are like me and you're just all about every aspect of the Greek, even the details. Only problem is that it is not available in a hardcover! What a travesty! It is a book that will get used often once one has become acquainted with how to use it, so I can see how the other reviewers talk about their copy falling apart, even though mine has not. I would highly recommend it to anyone using Greek long term or is just more curious on the formation of Greek words.**UPDATE I have found a hardcover version after searching for years, they apparently made it in hardcover for the first printing, then after that all of them were made in the cheap paperback form available now. Absolute shame considering it is a Greek reference book! Having said that, the hardcover is excellent and I would not own this in a paperback if I planned on using it a lot (like I do!), however, the hardcover was THE hardest book I have ever tried to find! People seem to raise the price on them so high they are out of reach (sometimes up to $400 or more!!!). Again, I rated the paperback version 5 stars because of CONTENT, not QUALITY! The hardcover I now own I give 5 stars for both quality and content!

I use this reference with another New Testament Morphology reference resource and it has been awesome. This resource cites many famous and notable classical references that complement one another. This has been essential to developing extensive intimacy with the Greek New Testament. If only there was a resource like it for the Septuagint and Classical Greek corpora.

I am currently taking Greek I in college and am using Bill D. Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar and Workbook. This is a great product if you want to dig a bit deeper into the language.

There is no doubt that this is an excellant resource and if you master it you will really know Greek. My experience was that I got bogged down in it. At some point I found reading and understanding the why more difficult than just memorizing it. It's intended as a reference tool and that is how it's best used early in your Greek - use occasionally but mostly just read the Greek and figure it out. After some practice you can read the Greek without having to think about what form it is or why, you just know it.

I just finished with Greek 1 at South African Theological Seminary and we used Basics of Biblical Greek as the text book. I have only started using this book but I can already see that this book will be of immense value to me.
