They're dictionaries and were new just what I needed.
Lots of respect for Merriam-Webster but a thesaurus is ... "a book of words and their synonyms" according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in this box set. However this "Thesaurus" reads as a dictionary and very poorly lists related words, LIST RELATED WORDS, WHAT A THESAURUS USUALLY DOES!!!Also this thesaurus is dated 2005. What a dissapointment.wikipedia exp. - "In general usage, a thesaurus is a reference work that lists words grouped together according to similarity of meaning (containing synonyms and sometimes antonyms), in contrast to a dictionary, which provides definitions for words, and generally lists them in alphabetical order. The main purpose of such reference works for users "to find the word, or words, by which [an] idea may be most fitly and aptly expressed" – to quote Peter Mark Roget, architect of the best known thesaurus in the English language."
Bought these for my daughter since she was having problems in school knowing which definitions were accurate online or not. She uses them now daily for her homework. I am a believer in books that one can hold especially reference books! I only buy paperback or hardback books for reference such as natural healing books, herbal books, writing and vocabulary etc. This way if for some reason the digital world goes black for any reason, I have my priceless books.
This was ordered as a gift so I can not open it to see how comprehensive the dictionary is. To often I find that newer issued dictionary's are missing many words from our very rich past & I find this disturbing!!! Words such as "Ague " one of the most common meanings is being stricken with a uncontrollable shaking or quivering due to a infirmity. I find this word completely missing from many so called comprehensive dictionary's! Also missing from many modern dictionary is the word Revenant, used as the title of a new movie many modern dictionary's don't even have this word & its meanings in them. This is a sad statement as the more articulate a person can become the more important we realize that each of these words can be very helpful in relaying a more precise & accurate description of events in our life's. not to mention that having a broader vocabulary can allow you to express yourself in a much more poetic manner if desired. It reminds me of a old episode of "M.A.S.H." when Hawkeye was asked why he was reading the dictionary & his tongue in cheek answer was " Because if I read this book I have read every book ever written." While Hawkeye's banal response certainly doesn't imply reading the dictionary automatically acquaints you with the worlds complete works of classic literature, it doe's have its merit.
After my daughters tried to use this for their middle school homework my husband wanted to know did we not have a real dictionary. So many of their vocabulary words are not in the dictionary. I thought at first they just weren’t looking right, because I couldn’t believe that many words could be missing, but they were right. Sometimes the words would be in the thesaurus, but not the dictionary. Very frustrating.
Product is new and in excellent condition as advertised. but I was utterly surprised and even shocked to see when opening the package that these were "mini" or "pocket-sized" books...I don't recall reading or seeing anything about that fact anywhere. Honestly I would not have bought those if I knew they were pocket-size books.
Exactly what I was looking for.
I bought these for my young daughter. She asked me a question. When I said, "Look it up," the way my parents told me, she looked perplexed. I ran to the computer to order these. I am glad that I could find all three references in one spot. Now when I say "Look it up," she groans, but she knows where to go.
