About the Author

Geoff Hann is the owner and managing director of Hinterland Travel, the only UK-based travel company currently taking tourists to cover Iraq completely (not including the travel companies specialising in pilgrim traffic) . He has been taking tourists to Iraq since 1970, and ran the famous post-war tour, following the toppling of Saddam Hussain in October 2003. In April 2007 he took the first group of tourists into the Kurdistan region of Iraq following the US occupation of the country and in 2009 began again to take tourists to the rest of Iraq. Since that time he has been taking increasing numbers of tourists to the country, both from the UK and from Europe, America, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Asia and Australia. He works closely with the Ministry of Tourism in Iraq. He advised the TV programme ‘Top Gear' on travel to and in Kurdistan for a TV Christmas special and his expertise is constantly sought by the press and other media when comment and opinion on travel to Iraq is being discussed.Karen Dabrowska was born in Wellington, New Zealand to Polish parents. She worked on a daily paper in New Zealand for six years before emigrating to Britain in 1985, where she completed an MA in International Journalism. She has edited a number of magazines and newsletters dealing with the Arab world including New Horizon and has visited most Arab countries. From 1991-2011 Karen was the London correspondent of Jana News Agency and Assistant Editor of Islamic Tourism Magazine and since 2012 she has been the London correspondent for the Tripoli Post. During the 1990s she edited a number of newsletters about Iraq.Karen's travels began with an overland tour of Nepal and India in 1980 but her interest in Iraq started in 1986 when she attended an international calligraphy festival in Baghdad and she has followed developments in the country since then. In 2003 Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, who was in charge of the Iraq post-war reconstruction, offered up some advice stating,"Tourism is going to be something important in that country as soon as the security situation is resolved, and I think that will be resolved as the Iraqis take over more and more responsibility for their own government." (Source: George Packer. The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, NY 2005, pp. 242). It is now 2015 and with the rise of ISIL, the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated greatly. Last month, Bradt released the 2nd edition of their Iraq guidebook, first published in 2002. It was clearly a bold move as between 2003 and 2009, tourism in Iraq had all but disappeared except for religious tourism to the holy Shia sites of Karbala and Najaf. In 2009, one of the book's authors,Geoff Hann, organized a tour to the country which encompassed almost the length of Iraq from Kurdistan down to Basra stopping at many archaeological sites along the way. From then on, Mr. Hann has led very comprehensive tours to the country annually. His tour company is one of less than a handful to do that. Clearly Iraq is not a travel destination that can easily be arranged, and the number of tourists (not the religious type) that make it to the country annually probably do not reach 3 digits. It is in this context that I find the publication of this guidebook a real surprise and kudos to Bradt for making this possible.. This book is written to be a guidebook only. It will not go into depth about Mesopotamian and Iraqi history, nor does it strive to be an archaeological catalog of the ancient sites. Alongside the descriptions of the many cities and sites, one is surprised to see listings which include "how to get there", rankings of hotels, shopping, lists of local restaurants, etc. How many tourists actually get into Iraq to see the sites described in the book? Unfortunately the answer is "not many". Some of the sites have now sadly been destroyed by ISIL, and the book does mention this; BUT, the book is a good read, well written by people who have traveled extensively in the country, and and gives hope that in the future tourism will definitely become an important factor in the Iraqi economy. The only criticism I have is that it would be nice to have the inclusion of more photographs.

My wife and I used this book for our weekly devotions over an extended year. Most chapters inspired us; some that particularly spoke to my heart were on Love, the Holy Spirit and Death. This book would be an excellent resource as a basis for discussions in an open-hearted, serious-minded group of spiritual seekers, whether or not they are believers in Jesus. I took part in a German-speaking small group which used a few chapters in this way.

The Revised Common Lectionary for year B just didn't work for us. The readings were too disjointed to make sense for a normally non-liturgical church. After getting through Advent we switched to this offering from McLaren. It has been a blast! I had already begun hosting a weekly sermon workshop wherein members worked through the texts with me to help me compose my sermons. That enabled me to enjoy this study both as a small group study and as a sermon Lectionary. McLaren has carefully constructed this series to stretch settled long-time church members and at the same time disciple the newest in the faith. The language is accessible, the verses for each week work together to build understanding. And over time, the series invites and draws believers deeper into the heart of God. I only wish we had begun at Advent last year.

An interesting journey with varying perspectives and some fresh understandings. One chapter per week. The chapters take only a few minutes to read and are easily understood. Scripture references keep the subject matter grounded appropriately. Did not challenge but did enlighten several areas. Best read over time.

This 52 week devotional book was helpful to me. I appreciate McLaren's perspectives and insights. I first bought and read this in ebook form and liked it; I decided to buy the hardback. If you're looking for fresh insights into scripture and don't want something long, tedious and complicated then this book might be for you! I recommend it!

While skeptical when ordering this book, it has turned out to be excellent for both individual and a small group study. My ecumenical women's group has been meeting weekly for over thirty years and has become jaundiced by many Bible and small group offerings. This book was bought for use as a personal study book and was offered to the group as Lenten study. It has worked well; we read both the scripture passages and short chapters aloud and have had meaningful discussions generated by end of chapter questions. This is quite different from other studies whose questions are so simple that we roll our eyes. While the group claims a "main-line" heritage, our theology and traditions encompass conservatives, moderates and liberals, and the book has appealed to us all. The book has guided us as we traveled through Lent, and we are planning to continue the journey through the next season of the ecclesiastical year. While the book is not a heavy theological tome, it has sufficient substance to guide a group of seekers with Biblically based readings and questions that expand a discussion. It also has an appreciation for an audience that is mature and grappling to refine faith and belief rather than being told what to believe. The appendix has excellent suggestions for small groups and the chapters are designed for a year’s study. The book has passed our group’s high approval standards; if looking for a good group study book, please consider this one.

We are using this book as a year-long adult Sunday School study. It does provide suggestions for the leader and group discussion. Because the chapters are short, which works well logistically in our time frame, there is not quite enough depth for me as in other studies (e.g. The Thoughtful Christian publications, which this class had been using in the past few years.)

I gave this review a lot of thought. At first, I was going to rate this book three stars, but after much consideration I think four stars is more accurate. I want to point out at the outset that I am not a liberal Christian, but I think a lot of great ideas have come out of that camp, and a lot of good ideas have come out of the conservative camp as well. The risks of both are essentially that extreme liberalism says there is nothing sacred enough that deserves our defense, and extreme conservatism says nothing we have done in the past is worth changing. I went into this book knowing it was more on the liberal side of things because I like to hear everyone's perspectives.With that being said, McLaren and I agree on most of his talking points. I found his assessment of the poor in our societies, the gross injustices and abuses that we as Christians should be taking an honest look at, to be valuable. He obviously is a thoughtful and deeply engaged Christian man. The points I disagreed with him on are centered mostly around his uncompromising adherence to liberation theology and nonviolence. Again, much good has come from liberation theology and nonviolence, but I find that the constant, unrelenting use of liberation theology as a filter to promote a heavily politicized (read: polarized) Christianity to be unpalatable. Such filtering feels, at times, like a hijacking, as if liberation theology's proponents would like to force their brand of Christianity.I tend to be simplistic in my own personal faith, avoiding dogma and doctrines, preferring to do Greek and Hebrew close word studies, and prayerfully come to my own conclusions about things. Along that vein, I don't think Jesus was a socialist or a Democrat, nor was he a capitalist or a Republican. To try to make his actions and words fit into such a limited and polarized viewpoint just seems... unethical. Of course, liberal and conservative Christians hate to hear this, and are generally fairly defensive of their worldview, as many of us can be.Still, I understand and appreciate why many of the ideas in liberation theology, nonviolence, and Christian environmentalism developed. As Christians, we should be supremely concerned with compassionate service and reaching out to the poor and lost, as Jesus did. We should be responsible citizens of the earth, acknowledging the sacredness of it and not exploiting it to feed the sickness of our greed. And peace should be our highest ideal, constantly pursued, choosing more effective and skillful means to resolve conflicts than with violence. And yet, *everything* in Christianity doesn't have to be framed around liberation theology, as if Christianity were just the faith wing of socialist politics. And I think a solid argument could be biblically made to support an idea of reasonable self-defense too. The fact that Peter even had a sword on his side while he was with Jesus shows that self-defense is sometimes just a normal part of living around crazy people. That doesn't undermine or lessen Christ's pointing out to Peter that those who live by the sword, die by the sword.So at times, I think McLaren was a bit over the top about nonviolence and liberation theology, and for me it became, well, annoying. But that has nothing to do with my opinion of him, which is high, or the value of his writing, which is refreshing. Discourse is a good thing, as well as thinking for yourself and not getting lured into the intoxication of groupthink, and I would venture to say McLaren would probably be supportive of me dissenting with some of his ideas.All in all, good read, and worth the purchase.

I am not a medical professional. Have taken a few Red Cross first aid class (including "Wilderness and Remote First Aid" - excellent!), and this book helps me translate between the super-comprehensive "Merck Manual" and my limited medical training. If you're going to own the full Merck Manual, and you're not a medical professional, you should also own this book.

Merck Manuals or essential when the power is off and you can't use your computer patient diagnostic program. Every Doctor, PA, NP, Paramedic etc should have one. I keep one in my bag in my vehicle just in case the world turns upside down. I also keep a "U.S. Army Special Forces Medical Handbook" in the bag as well in case conventional therapies are not available.

This is a short but very comprehension book! I love how this book uses clinical names for symptoms rather than plain language. I used it for a pathophysiology class where we had to use proper medical terminology when completing homework. It made it very easy to review case studies and answer questions about patient symptoms. I would have given this 5 stars as it could have included more symptoms.

Very similar to the Merck Manual Go-To-Home Guide for Symptoms, but with a more technical vocabulary. It is set up the same way with descriptions and charts, but is in a somewhat smaller, more portable, format. I imagine this would be the one for nursing and med-school students and other professional medical workers and technicians.

This is a great title to have around the house. It's not as 'in depth' as 'The Merck Manual' but then it specifically isn't supposed to be. I would recommend this to anyone who likes to get a feel for what is likely to be going on when symptoms arrive, and especially to parents of younger children who always seem to manage to have something malfunctioning in their young bodies. The book would make a great gift without fear of confusing the recipient with medical 'jargon' when the time arose to consult it.

i am a medical student and i was looking for some sort of diagnostic sieve/flow chart in a book to help me streamline and categorize my thought process towards developing useful differentials.. and i came upon this book... although it is helpful in this regard, i was expecting a bit more differentials, as well as a bit more details in the pathophysiology and treatment sections given that it was a MERCK.....nonetheless this book is worth buying given its price and has served its purpose somewhat... looking forward to future revisions

I don't work in a Public Library but I'm a frequent visitor. I'm both amused and astonished at the things visitors have said to librarians but notsurprised. The same can be said for book stores and you'll never find anyone more helpful that a library or book store. I'd love to see another volume of comments made in a library; I'm sure there are many more stories.

Working in a library like I do, I could so relate to a majority of these short stories. it is the type of book that you can flip through and choose a passage. I would say though that if you don't work in a print related job, you may not find the stories entertaining as you cannot relate. Otherwise, I enjoyed this little book.

The Micky Knights series is fabulous! I purchased books 5 & 6 first a couple of years ago and left them on my bookshelf without reading them. I had many books ahead of them to read first. Even though I am a voracious reader, it took awhile for me to read "The Death of a Dying Man". I became entranced immediately with Micky Knight and her supporting cast of characters. It is rare for me to make a connection with characters in the hundreds of books I have read, yet when I do, I have a special bookcase for these books. The Micky Knights series will take its place among a few other wonderful books on my special bookcase. After reading book 5 and 6, I ordered 1 thru 4 and 7 &8 immediately. There are many circumstances that I can personally relate to with Micky Knight's character. Micky is dealt a rough hand in the poker of life. For twenty years she has just survived without really living. Her character is brave, dedicated and honest but she has a battered self esteem. She cannot believe that she is worthy of another woman's love, especially, if that other woman is a wealthy professional. Micky is a PI and I am impressed with how she breaks down the clues in every case. I do have to ask one question though -- does Micky have a death wish? I mean through many of the very dangerous cases in this series, she is almost killed every time. I have to question -- why Micky is such a dope?! In almost every case she goes to confront the "bad guy(s)" without any protection or back-up! That makes me want to scream and pull my hair (let's be honest -- I would rather have another feel good motive to pull my hair) than disappointment or incredulity of how incredibly stupid Micky is time and time again when she confronts the "evil" people!Another exasperation with Micky is that she's a stubborn po-boy lover! She has the love of her life, Cordelia, on a emotional seesaw! I don't know if Cordelia has the patience of a saint or she is just clueless. There is something that bothers me though about the relationship between Micky and Cordelia. I noticed reading the series that there are no loving words between these two characters. Never a term of endearment between them. No Love, honey, darling, etc. Why? Regardless, of these contradictions, I have always been particular about a story that has a female, cop, lawyer or PI. I love reading how she matches her intellect and wit with her male counterparts. How she is brave, dedicated and honest. How she swoops down on her nemesis and saves the damsel in distress or saves the day. Also, the hot love scenes the author has created between these beautiful women in this series are great and enjoyable because they communicate another dimension of solidarity between the characters. I look forward to more of Micky Knight, et al.

In a city that doesn't even have working stoplights, there seems little need for a private investigator. Her friends are all struggling with their own disrupted lives, lost jobs, destroyed homes. And the woman Micky thought she'd be with forever, Cordelia James, hasn't returned.Micky's investigation leads to a tangle of greed and deceit that stretches back generations. Someone is using the destruction wrought by the flooding to finish what was started a hundred years ago. To stop them Micky will have to risk not just life and limb, but any chance to reconnect with Cordelia and rebuild the life she had before Katina. But if she doesn't stop them, a young Midwestern teenager whose only crime was wanting to help the destroyed city, will be the next body left in an abandoned house.My Thoughts: I think this must be the best one yet. Post-Katrina New Orleans is a dark and desolate place, and Micky is just trying to make it day to day with her anger and hurt and ennui. The book is difficult to read - Micky has retreated back to her own self and is avoiding her friends, avoiding life. Redmann portrays the angst and anger and depression in such a realistic way that it was difficult to read, but at the same time it was so unflinching that you had to keep going and live what these people had experienced. Highly recommended.

J.M. Redmann returns once again to post-Katrina New Orleans for her sixth Mickey Knight mystery. For fans of the series the real interest may be whether or not Mickey and Cordelia get back together after what happened in the previous book. They'll have to read this one to find out.Just like the city, Mickey's life is a shambles and she is trying to cope with an atmosphere radically changed from what she is used to. She stumbles into a mystery when she's hired to go to someone's house to retrieve mementoes and has to help a church group that has come as volunteers to pull houses down and instead discovers a body. Mickey tries to solve a murder while dealing with misguided teenagers, religious conservatives and a wealthy family that is being blackmailed. What she really wants to figure out is how to talk to Cordelia and try to see if they can mend their relationship.Redmann makes it clear in this book that there is still a lot to be said about what Katrina did to New Orleans and the people there. The mystery in this book isn't that mysterious, but serves rather as a vehicle to carry the rest of the story. The real focus is on the trauma that still reverberates from that storm. Redmann deals with the city and its people with great sympathy and the affection she feels for both pours from the pages. For sections that are written so well, the "story" actually gets in the way and comes off as rather contrived.Still, Jean Redmann is an extremely accomplished writer and knows how to use words with an elegance that few achieve. She spins a mood better than most authors are capable of and it gives her books a very rich feeling. That experience makes the book worth reading even if the mystery is somewhat weak.

The book doesn't come with a CD, which is absolute necessary. Instead it's online. So you need to go to Internet, open an account, with your all data, confirm, receive a code, etc. Nothing works, You need to call to make it manually. It took a lot of time to deal with. This was not a good idea.Why Kaplan needs your data?I suggest you buy a book with CD.

This product arrived very quickly. The introduction was rather lengthy but the practice tests are very useful. I especially like the online test versions.
