My first job out of college was working in the reference room of a small public library and based on that sometimes bizarre one-year experience, I can tell you that this collection of real-life stories by Gina Sheridan about the interactions of librarians with their patrons is absolutely dead-on. Oh, and each one is priceless—whether it be hilarious, embarrassing, heartbreaking, gag-inducing disgusting or just plain confusing. This is a must-read for anyone who has ever worked in or volunteered at a library or patronized one. Let's hear three cheers for all hardworking librarians who graciously put up with the public and our wacky queries!Warning: Beware reading this in public. You will be laughing out loud most of the time!
I don't work in a Public Library but I'm a frequent visitor. I'm both amused and astonished at the things visitors have said to librarians but notsurprised. The same can be said for book stores and you'll never find anyone more helpful that a library or book store. I'd love to see another volume of comments made in a library; I'm sure there are many more stories.
Do you want to know what it's like to work at a public library? Read this book. You'll get a real taste of what it's like to be at the center of most cities' de facto mental hospital dayrooms--the public computer banks of public libraries. You'll also get a sample of why library work is rewarding.
I thought this was to be a humorous book for librarians but as a library worker, the stories seem pretty normal. There are some nice stories and antidotes but not terribly funny.
This book is filled with amusing stories & conversations overheard in libraries. I bought this as a gift for my mother in law who has been a librarian for many years but found myself reading it first!
Book #68 Read in 2014I Work at a Public Library by Gina SheridanThis was a cute, quick read. In this book, librarians tell their stranger-than-fiction stories of what library patrons ask for, request of them or do in the library. Some are laugh out loud stories, some are disturbing and some are heartwarming. Anyone who is a library lover will enjoy this book.http://melissasbookpicks.blogspot.com
I like libraries, so I am excited to have a chance to read a collection of true-life stories about Ms. Sheridan's-and other peoples-experiences of working in a public library. These stories make me feel like I am working in the library along side her.
Working in a library like I do, I could so relate to a majority of these short stories. it is the type of book that you can flip through and choose a passage. I would say though that if you don't work in a print related job, you may not find the stories entertaining as you cannot relate. Otherwise, I enjoyed this little book.
