This is written in the vernacular that only a Ph D candidate can appreciate. Expect to read passages a couple of time as Rollins gets bogged down in polysyllabic words to relay simple concepts. Although I may not agree with every tenant that he espouses, I must say that his premise of betraying organized religion in order to save "faith" is quite compelling. This is a must read for anyone into apologetics. It's even a good read for someone in a crisis of faith or who wants to understand their faith more.

Excellent book that lays out in a scholarly way exactly the issues which Jews and Christians have with the scriptural narrative. It has taken us a long time to get back to St Augustine's insight and Rollins should be congratulated. One only hopes the Episcopal Church turns back from its pursuit of politically correct dogma in order to emphasize personal transformation.

Fidelity of Betrayal is a great read if you are willing not to argue with it from the start. It offers an intriguing way of examining the place and role of Judas in the Gospels that is imaginative and challenging. Through its examination of old testament narrative and the gospels argument is made that causes one to reexamine centuries held assumptions. While it may not work well in its rawest forms as content for a Sunday morning congregation, it definitely is a good read for anyone who is involved in exegetical work of any kind (preachers, teachers, etc.).

I've read Peter Rollins' How Not to Speak of God a few times, and that short discourse always leaves me wanting more. The Fidelity of Betrayal is that something more. Using popular Bible passages, the book examines the seemingly contradictory notion that perhaps the most religious thing we can do is to not be religious. This is Rollins at his best: academic, challenging, and unconventional.

This book turns religion on it's head. It makes you think about the gospel in ways you always thought were heretical, but in which makes complete sense. Very challenging. Peter Rollins writes at a pretty high level, almost like reading philosophy which is one reason I love it!

An outstanding book that presents a mature view of God beyond the need to literalize and fully in line with mystic thought and experience. Absolutely essential for anyone moving toward a mature Christian experience.

I found this to be a very enjoyable and accessible exploration of the paradox of faith. Mr. Rollins has a gift for balancing a rich intellectualism with humility, humor, and vibrant sorry-telling. I very much appreciated the parables too!

I just have one parable to illustrate from the book that pretty much gives you a taste of what this book is all about. I am paraphrasing here but here is the main gist of this parable. its about a monk dude that lives at the base of this mountain and the guy lives in a very secluded area and doesn't even have a door on his house. so this thief knows this and is like, bam I could rob this guy super easy so he makes the trek out while this monk is out walking and when he gets inside the door the house is empty. The monk returns and finds the startled burglar and says to him. wow brother man i feel bad you came all the way out here to rob me and have got nothing to show for it. so he gets naked and gives the thief his clothes and the blanket he sleeps on. the thief just takes the stuff and peaces out not knowing how to respond. as the monk builds a fire and looks up to the moon he says. man if that thief knew i was even ready to give him the moon. You see the treasure this monk had is not something that belonged to him but rather was given to him and the only way to respond is this- "all one can do when ones treasure is not of physical nature is to point toward it, recall it, and invite people to bask in it." BAM WHAM THANK YOU MAAAM. All I have to say is that the Good Lord is using Peter Rollins in marvelous ways (at least in my life) and I have to tell you. If you ain't read none of his books, ya better recognize and buy them up. Trust me it will be well worth your time and money! These books have been the single best investment i have made this year. Peter Rollins if you aint heard about him, HEAR about him! Word

The author kept his word in that his history of Chicago would be different from most other histories. His theme was economic-based. He focused on the geography, explaining the initial situation of how Chicago started in the location that it did. Then how the people I've came the obstacles of the location to build the city. Like many cities, there was no overarching plan. The city had problems and plenty of them. But then came the Great Fire, which provided a second chance to make it a better place. This set the stage for the high-rise Chicago we know today. Then in 1893 came the White City showing the world what Chicago had become after the fire and what it could become in the future. A very interesting history that has led me to other books about Chicago. I highly recommend this book.

Donald Miller wrote a masterpiece that belongs in every library. I loved it so much that I read it twice and you can believe it will remain in my personal library as both an entertainment and reference source. What can I say about Miller other than WOW!City of the Century is a wonderfully written history of the development and trials and tribulations of nineteenth century Chicago. The good - the bad - and the ugly. The story is captivating and I found it hard to put it down. Note: after my 1st read, I bought copies for my brothers and grandchildren and they too love this book.I submit that it should be a MUST read for anyone with an interest is U.S. history since it is a story about nineteenth century Chicago as told through individual stories of Chicago business leaders, politicians and Chicago citizens. You will enjoy how the story unfolds and the influence that Chicago and it's people had as the U.S. marched westward taking along the Midwest ideals, values, and attitudes.I can only way that I was NOT sorry that I bought Miller's book. You won't be sorry either!

For a native Chicagoan who knows all these places and streets this is a great book. It is not a travel guide. It is history. I grew up in Indiana and knew some of Chicago's wild past, but this book really gives it perspective. From a swamp that even the Indians didn't want anything to do with to the Columbian Expo of 1893, this book is a romp.Excellent book. Well worth the read. For a great companion piece read "Devil in the White City" by Larsen. That one will have you gasping to turn to the next page.

Even though I take a keen interest in the city of Chicago, the stunning scenery from its waterfront, the treasure of impressionistic paintings in its art museum, etc, I find this book far too detailed (and long) for leisurely reading. It is a history book in its own right. However, if a reader is not into town planning, architecture, journalism, or politics, he/she may find the book rather too tedious. The contents are in fact interesting. But I find the author too long-winded. And the titles of chapters do not give sufficient clue for a reader to pick those that suit his/her interest. In short, this book is recommended only for readers who are looking to study the history of Chicago.

This is simply an excellent history of Chicago, from the first settlement through the rebuilding after the great fire. This book is so good that I gave it to a Chicago friend as a Christmas gift. In fact, it's so excellent that the Chicago Architectural Foundation has their docents read it and use the information on their tours! I know this after taking a tour; the docent mentioned much of the information contained in the book. I asked her afterward if she was familiar with the book, and she told me that it's a significant part of their study materials.

A very detailed history of Chicago up to the beginning of the 20th century. The author covers every part of the growth of the city, its various movers and shakers, its low life, sleaze bags and upper crust wealthy citizens. In some respects the detail is more then is necessary to get the proper perspective of the events and people who shaped them but the reader can't complain that the subject was not thoroughly covered. I recommend the book to all Chicago residents who call the second city home and are interested in the city's development.

Very well written and informative. If you are interested in 19th century American history this book is for you. From the founding of Chicago to the end of the 19th century is described in interesting story form with details about the important people who impacted the city. The good and the bad are mentioned without bias.

I was looking for a book to prepare for my first trip to Chicago. This book really fit the bill. It gave me some great background knowledge so I could appreciate everything I was seeing on my visit. Beyond being very informative it's just a fun easy read

A great mystery turned into a conspiracy theory 101. Love the characters and the fact you couldn't tell who the main villain was throughout most of the book.

It was fine for a chance in the pace of the usual light novels. It does become evident who the main source of conflict is around midway, but the focus on the story is something that I really enjoyed.

I couldn't put this book down. Wished their was a sequel to it. The characters were typical of a shojo story but the plot focused on discovering a cure for Demon Claw instead of the romance which kept me interested in it.

Has a story to tell and engaging. Bring on vol. 2

If you ever had a lot riding on one paper, you can relate to Mia. Chances are, however, that you didn’t believe your research was the one thing that could save your mother.Set in the mythical Kingdom of Isea, village girl Mia is accepted as a pharmacology student at the national academy. While many of her classmates are content with getting a thesis topic from their instructor, Mia is insistent on doing her own idea and getting money for her research. She can’t do her Grand Plan alone though, and when she reveals she wants to do her research on the plague known as Demon Claw, she finds herself not only isolated but threatened as well. Fortunately, she manages to get three students to join her team: Felix, a law student repeating his first year, Henrik, a blunt but practical medical student, and Felix’s mage friend (and babysitter) Mathias.Right away, some of you are probably rolling your eyes. Another harem story where everyone is interested in the heroine. Well, first off, Mathias is only in the group because of Felix. Secondly, the story never dissolves into being a fullblown romance. Mia isn’t a complete dunce when it comes to romantic interest, but she is focused on her research goals. She is also concerned Felix has just become attached to her because she helped him during a panic attack. Many main love interests have emotional scars, but we don’t often see an actual condition like PTSD. It’s Henrik who has more of the standoffish qualities typically found in the main hero/heroine, but both are rather supportive of Mia. Felix in particular throws his full weight into fulfilling Mia’s dream, and it’s been a long while since I’ve seen someone be that determined to help, especially in a non-gushy or light love story like this. Also unlike many current licensed light novels, Mia and the Forbidden Medicine Report is a stand-alone story. It is very much what the title says: Mia and her report, not Mia and her years-long study or career. Perhaps author Yamamoto will write a sequel one day, but for now, the story covers the four students trying to get a grant despite opposition and lack of research materials on Demon Claw. It’s a bit of a different feeling, as other authors would have spent volumes on Mia and her team narrowing down a topic, pouring over files for clues, creating a proposal, and trying to implement social change. There’s a lot that needs to happen with a mission as ambitious as Mia’s, and it takes a little while for the story to find its groove. The early chapters are a bit heavy on explanation, but medical jargon and whatnot are virtually nonexistent. There is some skipping or shortening of scenes and some perfectly-aligned sets of circumstances. If the story were ever adapted to some other medium, I’d love to see the dramatic moment when Mia finally presents her stubborn professor with a finished Grand Plan or really show the months ticking by. The ending is conclusive enough to be a full story, but there is still plenty of room for the author or even fans to build upon.Case in point: the steampunk setting. I remember feeling shocked when robotic guards were suddenly mentioned about 40% of the way through so I didn’t get that impression at all when I was reading, although looking back, there are a few easily-missed references to “autobikes” and the like. I just assumed it was a typical fantasy world with some modern conveniences like automobiles. Robots obviously aren’t a huge issue when the subject of the story is about researching human diseases, but if the author was going to have automatons, I wish the story would have done something with them. At the very least, you’d think the major academic facility would have a department where students work on new or improving technology.Or, you know, it felt pretty unnecessary considering the light novel was rather unique. I mean, not having someone whisked away to a land of magic is already fairly uncommon in the current light novel market, but an average girl whose only special ability is hours of memorizing herbs and treatments? It makes Mia and the Forbidden Medicine Report have a surprising realistic feel to it despite the existence of magic and mages going berserk. It’s rare to not have “beating the demon lord” as the ultimate goal to stop a disease. Plus, the artwork was perfectly placed in the story, and the dialogue felt more natural compared to some other Cross Infinite World works. I believe it’s also shorter than some of their other recent releases, so I’m sure that played a factor. You may think that a story about writing a report is about as much fun as actually writing a report, but good characters, a deep-seated mystery, and a dash of magic make Mia and the Forbidden Medicine Report a light novel worth reading.- Krystallina

Novices will find the work both comprehensible and entertaining."—Library Journal"A limpidly written, highly accessible, and comprehensive history of Greece and its civilizations from prehistory through the collapse of Alexander the Great's empire. . . . Having read this book fifteen years ago in 1998, and now reading it again in 2013 I am struck at how clear the prose is and how easy it is to understand Martin's ideas. This was the book that ignited my love of ancient history and led me to focus on ancient history during my undergraduate years - even going so far as to write an honors thesis on late antiquity. The subject matter of Ancient Greece remains relevant to our modern world, whether people wish to believe it or not during this revisionist period that seeks to equalize all periods and cultures. In reading about the Ancient Greeks, we see the nucleus of our own current world (In the West). Martin does an excellent job of writing a brief, accessible survey of the period. Beginning with the Mycenaeans and the Minoans he chronologically surveys ancient Greek history down to the Hellenistic period, that dazzling period in ancient history when cross-cultural fermentation unleashed a world of advances that form the basis for many parts of our modern world. Martin discusses ideas and dissects culture particularly well throughout the book. And because so much of what we know comes from the literature that has survived, there is a of analysis of the literature. If you enjoy Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, Thucydides, Aristophanes, Sappho, Sophocles, Euripedes, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, etc. you get the idea, then you will enjoy the glimpses that Martin gives you of the writings and what those writings say about the period the authors lived in.Due to the nature of our sources, Martin focuses more on later period than on earlier periods. That is to be expected. In addition to the excellent survey, Martin also offers a great bibliography for the reader who is interested in exploring the world of the Ancient Greeks in more details. Because this book was published in 1996 and updated in 2000, it doesn't discuss a lot of the recent scholarship on the period (In particular if you're a fan of the Peloponnesian War then Kagan's tetraology on the war is a great resource - The Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War (A New History of the Peloponnesian War) ). Still, if you have an interest in the period and haven't read much before, this is a great place to begin.

A very good introduction to ancient Greece and its profound cultural achievements.Martin starts with a chapter on prehistory which is not really about Greece at all, and gets sidetracked with speculation - for example, that the development of agricultural society resulted in women taking a subordinate social position. However, from chapter two the book provides a clear, straightforward account of the economic, political, social and cultural development of Greece. Its strength is in description rather than explanation - leaving the reader pondering why Greece's cities concurrently organized themselves into polis with similar concepts of citizenship and popular participation; and more deeply, what were the roots of "the [Greek] view that people must give reasons to explain what they believe to be true" - an astounding development then, which has yet to occur in large parts of today's world. This valuable survey is enhanced by Martin's gift for choosing short quotations from the ancient sources that express the essence of what he is describing, such as the remark of Xenophon about the hatred of helots (community owned slaves) for the Spartans: "They said they would be glad to eat them raw." Throughout, Martin spices the book brilliantly with such extracts. The second edition makes a huge improvement in the reproduction of the book's photographs, which unfortunately are also reduced in number. The new edition also wisely guides the reader to classical literature itself as a source of understanding and insight.

Thomas R. Martin has quietly established himself as one of my favorite historians to read. My primary interest in history is Medieval Europe, but I felt that I needed to better understand the bookends that are the Classical and Modern periods of European history to complement my studies of Medieval history. Martin's books have been an incredible help to me in quickly gaining a grasp of the history and accomplishments of Ancient Greece. In a short amount of space, Martin covers the history of Greece from paleolithic through Hellenistic times. Despite the brevity of his work, he is able to weave together a satisfying narrative that meets the needs of anyone looking for an introduction to Ancient Greek history without having to read multiple volumes. It is a great branching off point for further study of individual periods of Greek history (Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic) if one is interested. What makes Martin's work a success is his ability to organize vast amounts of information and tell history in a way that is compelling while remaining objective, honest, and free from superfluous language. I particularly enjoyed Martin's discussion of the early history of Greece from the Paleolithic through the Bronze Age (including the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations) and into Archaic Greece. The reader is truly able to see the development of Greek civilization and establishment of key features, such as the polis (city-state), that would come to dominate the Classical period. Even if one is primarily interested in Classical Greece, Martin's account remains interesting and informative from beginning to end and I highly recommend it.For those who are interested in the time periods covered towards the end of this book, I would also recommend Martin and Christopher Blackwell's "Alexander the Great: The Story of an Ancient Life" and Michael Grant's "From Alexander to Cleopatra: The Hellenistic World." It seems Martin has also published an account of Ancient Roman history recently entitled Ancient Rome: From Romulus to Justinian" which I look forward to reading.

Kaplan takes us where most have never been or dreamed of going, but these are pivotal states and regions with tons of history. Trying to get your head around the power vectors of Persia, the Ottoman Empire, the Rise & Fall of the USSR and the ethnic forces from the Mediterranean to the deserts and mountains of Central Asia is mind boggling, but Kaplan sorts it on the ground and up front and personal. Never has a region so distant and unknown been so critical to history in the making. This is one of my favorite Kaplan books since the balance between travel road-a-logue and geo-political analysis is just about right. The only thing better is reading this and Kaplan's To the Ends of the Earth which covers some of the same territory, but with a wider scope. Read and learn! You'll be glad you did and become a more knowledgeable citizen of the world.

Like most Kaplan books, starts off interesting, ends strong, and we learn a fair bit along the way. Enjoyable and not very demanding a read. Might have been better as two books, to give more depth and detail to each country - especially the people. Good interviews, but little depth to them. I didn’t get a sense of the people he spoke to, though their statements were clear enough.

I first encountered Kaplan in his absorbing article on instability of Pakistan in the September 2000 Atlantic magazine. He warned then that the Taliban activities in Afghanistan were having a dangerously destabilizing effect on Pakistan and American foreign policy seemed to be alarmingly indifferent to what that fact could portend for the region and American interests in the middle east. That was 1 full year to the date before 9/11. Remarkably, he was eerily prescient. He has a habit of being so.When Kaplan travelled the Balkans in the late 80's, he foresaw the region lumbering toward war while the US and Europe seemed unwilling or unable to do anything meaningful but watch uneasily. Within a year of the publication his Balkan Ghosts, war broke out and occupied NATO forces and resources for several years before relative peace arose. Indeed, Clinton's reading of Balkan Ghosts has been rumored to have persuaded him that the US had to intervene.Kaplan's Eastward to Tartary covers what he referred to as "the new near east": the region east of the newly expanded NATO borders, west of China, and south of Russia. Why did he focus on this region? Because 70% of the then-known oil reserves and 40% of the then-known nat gas reserves were located in the region. That makes the region inherently important to all powerful nations who need a secure source of energy, including the US, Europe, China, and India. Combine that with the fact that 50% of the population of the entire region was then under 14, and that there were negligible education, growth, and employment opportunities for the young in those same nations, you have the recipe for volatility that is difficult if not impossible to control. The unemployed young have no loyalty to the regimes therein, at the same time democratic reform is inevitable. That in turn signalled that bottom-up revolutions would topple reliable despots in the region on whom the US has depended for 60 years to secure access to oil while at the same time the Iranian revolution in 1978 proved that democratizaing alone need not result in western-friendly nations.Kaplan predicted that the instability would run for 10 - 15 years. I write this review on the eve of Egypt's successful (at least temporarily) revolution. We know now in 2011 how prescient Kaplan was in 2000 and he merits reading and re-reading because we are not through this unstable period yet. I urge readers of this very current review to read the book to know how to assess whether the US policy is effective, but if you can't read the book, listen to Kaplan's presentation to the School of Advanced Military Studies at the Command and General Staff School, where American field grade officers are groomed for generalships. It can be found on C-SPAN's archives site under Kaplan's name and the title of the book.

One of the sad shortcomings of American society is that it has produced generations of illiterates when it comes to an understanding of the complexity of the world. When given a choice between watching some "reality" show versus reading about significant world events that can affect our lives, millions will chose who gets voted off the island versus understanding why Sept 11, 2001 happened. Kaplan digs deep into the real world, but would never reach the recognition rate of a tart who became famous for her disappearing cigar trick and became a "star" on her own "reality" show. What sets Kaplan apart from many of his fellow journalists is his hard work and sacrifice to get the story, enduring a lot of hardship to get to the real world as we never see it, and seldom read about. And his story is about the future of mankind instead of tabloid titillation which dominates the news, but is really the toilet paper of history. As someone who has traveled in many of the countries where Kaplan has developed his stories, I find his insightful observations and conversations with the real folk to put into perspective the superficial observations I have made, or read about from journalists who get the story from the comfort of their hotel rooms without ever getting their fingernails dirty. Even worse, his fellow journalists show up with their story already written and go home as soon as it is "verified" by talking to some propagandist, functionary, or peasant who fits their purposes. This is another very good book about the real world, including the vast disparity in the development of areas and peoples whose ancestors were the subjects of Marco Polo's travelogue.Americans can be very naive about the world, which is not surprising given the pitifully politically correct versions of history taught in all levels of schools today, but Kaplan has been there and experienced the world, with all its warts, and does a great job of putting it all into perspective. Like Polo's second excursion to Cathay, he went north and met the descendents of the same people who live in a world far closer to Polo's than the one we know today, seven hundred years later. While some of the events and people are changed from the book, it is a great book to understand the complexity of the forces dictating world events today in a very dangerous part of the world, the breeding grounds of the next phase of world conflict.

This book is suitable for beginners. This book is a very interesting and informative read for beginners. I want to secure myself from being hacked. The book guides me on the basics of hacking. The book will not make you a hacker but it provides a great overview of what hacking is all about. It serves as a nice introduction to hacking introducing you to the different kinds of hacking that you can perform. It has a lot of information that a person needs to be more knowledgeable about Hacking and it will teach you how to be aware if you’re experiencing a virus attack or malware attack. I learned some very good basics from this book. This book is good for those who wants to start hacking. Recommended reading for all computer owners/users.

This book is a brief one and tells you everything you need to know of hacking - basically tips to save yourself from getting hacked.Although, I found all these really really basic (as like the book title says), but was expecting to be more advanced in some chapters. This guide will also teach you some simple hacking techniques. Hacking is not only to invade someone's privacy, it also means to save your privacy from hackers! This will be a good book for computer beginner's as this has a chapter with general tips of computer safety..Nevertheless, it was good read :)

A few months ago I started my journey into de Hacking world. I have a cousin who works as a programmer, and he is teaching me some of the basic stuff about Hacking, and how to be make a good barrier against cyber pirates. To complete and complement my learning process, I’m doing some research on my own, and books have always been a good source of information (much more if they are digital).I have read 1 or 2 books about this subject, and all of them have been helpful. So, when I saw this book at a great discount price I didn’t have doubts to buy it. It is a very clear and concise book, and it has made me understand some terms that I didn’t have very clear at the beginning.

Just received this book and did a quick and rapid scan. The book provides information somewhere between complete noob to novice when it comes to hackers, and computers and the internet of things. If you grew up around and in computers then you probably know more than this book will tell you.-or-If your not so computer-wise it wouldn't be a bad idea to get this book and get some basic ideas on terminology and keeping your computer somewhat safe. (If your like my mom who never updates, changes passwords, or does scans.)This book received 3 stars because I expected more precise and in-depth technical explanations. The headline was slightly misleading as well, this book does not tell or even touch the subject of hacking for personal use. I also found some things that were outdated, even for 2015.Overall, this book is a very basic explanation on what hacking is and all the crazy terminology that surrounds it.

This book has provided the other aspects of hacking and tips on how to protect your own computer or systems from this untoward incident. This is so helpful to everybody specially that stealing of personal information is somehow rampant during this time. All you need to know to protect your system is in this book. It’s just a matter of knowing the basics and this book have provided information that will protect you and your computer when in this time that we do a lot of transactions over the internet.
