Review

"Diversity is a crucial issue, and this series effectively highlights the differences among various ethnic groups, religions, and types of households and shows readers that though different beliefs and customs exist, all are equally worthy of respect. The books are told from the first-person perspectives of young protagonists who interact with people in their communities, which will help kids relate directly to the subject matter. The cheerful, appealing illustrations complement the text, which is clear and straightforward yet also nuanced and culturally sensitive. Covering topics such as meals, languages, houses of worship, and a diverse and inclusive mix of families, the series emphasizes that it's best not to ignore differences but to learn more about them. VERDICT: All students can benefit from this series."―School Library Journal, Series Made Simple--Journal

For kindergarten

David was learning a lot about baseball from his friend Zach who was a thirteen-year-old boy. Zach had invited him to his synagogue, but David was worried and talked to his Dad. “What if I don’t understand things? What if I do something wrong?” His Dad reassured him that everything would go well and he talked to him about being respectful. Zach was going to have a bar mitzvah and it was a very important birthday for him. It was really interesting for David to learn about a kippah, Hebrew, the prayers and the singing, but it also was a lot of fun!On Sunday when David and his Dad went to their church, Grace Lutheran Church, he learned a bit more about religion. David also went to a Catholic church with his Mom and learned that they were “different kinds of Christian churches.” David had all kinds of questions for his father and he tried to answer them. When they were volunteering at a place that served food to those in need, he asked Sophia about her church. Sophia said that “her family isn’t a part of a religion.” David began to be interested in other religions and took a closer look at others around him. He learned about Muslims, Buddhism, Christianity, and some of their celebrations. Do you know about other religions? This is a fun, pensive book that will encourage young children to learn about and respect other religions. David is aware of other religions, but doesn’t know much about them. He becomes curious when attending the synagogue where Zach has his bar mitzvah. Many children can explore the different religions on their own, but it would make a great classroom project to share with a friend or friends. Just by looking around him, David finds there are many different religions and beliefs. He also discovers that some people aren’t part of any religion. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary of terms used in the text, a “Make a ‘How I Can Help’ List” activity, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.
