As a father who recently lost a daughter, I read this novel-parable with both pleasure and pain. I could get into the very soul of the narrator, Paige Moresco. who lost her husband a few years earlier. i know such a loss and ongoing grief can freeze a person in place.HUMOR AND LIFE WISDOM HELP. The author blends a light style and humor with Paige’s struggle to come out of grief, both for her own sake and for Trey, her teenage son. The parable of trying to grow a garden in a bylaw-controlled neighborhood lends itself to humor and rich life lessons. Those bits of wisdom resonate with me as I'm sure they will with you.CLEVER OVERLAYS. These develop from a guru-author’s motivational advice put into practice by Paige’s new advertising boss. Some lead to groans and humor, some to heartfelt agreement. Right here are great takeaways for readers.CHARACTERS are mostly lovable everyday types, just like folks we meet in our lives. Nothing violent or hateful, but most change sympathetically as the various forms of grief and loss are dealt with. And there is love – slow developing and no mad sex.THE WEAKNESS. There is one character important to the plot who is so exaggerated that I could not believe her actions and accomplishments. No guru in the motivational world would succeed with so many f-words and crude behavior in just a few pages. That really detracts from the tone and credibility of that part of the novel. Also, I thought there were too many plot twists for the sake of trying to surprise us rather than plot development.I found this to be a spiritual and emotion-involving novel, but could’ve been better without the weaknesses later on.PLEASE NOTE: I purchased this through my FIRST READS membership as a Kindle Book. It should be noted as "VERIFIED PURCHASE." But it hasn't as yet shown up as such.

Whenever the First Reads come out each month, I hope that there will be a book that I will enjoy. Sometimes you never know what you'll get because some of the Kindle First/First Reads books are truly good reads and others aren't so good. I browsed through the selections offered this month and chose this one because I was in the mood for a contemporary fiction novel and this one seemed most appealing to me. I'd say this month, I made a good choice!Paige Moresco lost her soul mate, Jesse two years ago and she's still swallowed up by grief. She has a tough relationship with her teenage son, Trey and she's at risk for losing the job she's held for 17 years. Paige finds herself digging up her yard, much to the dismay of her snobbish suburban neighbors, which starts her healing process. After she decides to plant a large garden, she learns not only how to grow and care for plants and vegetables, she discovers more about herself and how to move forward with her life. After recently finishing this novel, I have to say I think it was a good, enjoyable read! The writing was smart and the eclectic group of characters made for an entertaining read. Yes, there are some somber parts, mostly when Paige thinks and talks about Jesse, but most of it was more lighthearted. There is a lot of humor in this novel, not haha-funny but more witty, sarcastic humor. That's my kind of humor so I definitely "dug it" (see what I did there????)!For anyone who wants to know in advance, there are a number of swear words in this book. They aren't on every page but there are enough of them that it would bother someone who doesn't want to read any swear words in their books.Overall, I enjoyed this book and felt it was a good choice for this month's read! I liked it because it was enjoyable seeing the friendships and relationships blossom and I believe Paige's garden was a metaphor for her life. This novel was well-written and I recommend it if you enjoy contemporary, humorous fiction!

I read books about horror or fantasy. Or the occasional biography. This book popped up in my Kindle 'First reads' email, and for some reason I still can't explain, I downloaded it. Let's be clear, this is not the type of book I would ever normally read, but I gave it a chance. That turned out to be a really good idea. I totally enjoyed this book. The story, the characters and the message that being careful and not taking risks isn't always the best option, are very well thought out. Digging In is the first novel in quite a while that made me lose track of time and go on reading well past midnight. It's just very entertaining. Just like the ethos of the book, I took a chance and it worked out very well! Totally recommended !

There’s something special in this book, hidden between the pages yet shared with us at the same time. Author Loretta Nyhan has shared a humorous yet realistic vision of one woman’s reborn hope and persistence, even when faced with the collapse of everything that meant something to her. This is the situation facing Paige. Her husband is gone, and the company she has worked at for years is heaving with new (and somewhat off-the-wall) changes. Her teenage son is experiencing difficulties, and like many parents, she is not sure what words and actions will fix his issues. Nor does she know how to fix her own. This book is extremely well-written and humorous throughout. There are changes for more characters than merely Paige, which generates more interest. For those put off by the f bomb, there is a character near the end that uses it constantly. However, the trashy talk was a main aspect of the plot, and not used gratuitously. I never take off stars when I feel the language was used appropriately...just letting you know it is there.I began reading this book and didn’t realize how wrapped up I was in the story until I found myself at the final chapter. This is a smart, entertaining book that never gets sassy and deals with adult issues just as we would experience them: with humor, anger, straight-forward thinking, and sometimes a touch of wonder that we did so well at something new. Five stars.~edited for a typo
