There are some hits and some misses in this book. It has a lot of the standard juice recipes you can find in any book - apple carrot orange; ginger carrot orange; etc. The blended juices stood out more and a couple favorites are Minty Mango and Tropical Turmeric. Three stars because the Suppers section needs to be revisited because some recipe ingredient quantities are way off. For example, the lemongrass coconut noodle “soup”. This is not a soup, it was more like an alfredo, very thick and no broth. That recipe would need 2-3x the amount of liquid to resemble soup. Next is the veggie lentil chili. DO NOT use 2 tablespoons of salt. The chili was so salty that half of one bowl was eaten and had to throw out the rest which was a shame. For the not “Super simple” snacks section the carrot coconut muffins recipe is a disaster and not simple and not cheap (coconut flour, almond flour, brown rice flour - about $25 in flour alone) The resulting full mixture was more like damp sawdust that needed to be baked for an hour (not 25 minutes) in order to somewhat resemble a muffin. This very expensive batch of muffins ended up in trash as well, not a lot of flavor and texture was way too dense. When entire prepared recipes go in the trash after following recipe to the letter, it’s very aggravating and a huge waste of time and money. For the supplied 5 day ingredient list plan on spending between $250-$350 depending on where you shop or order food from online. In addition to a juicer, you need a blender and food processor to have access to a good amount of the recipes in this book. One recipe also called for you to use your spiralizer... who has a spiralizer? oh right... NONE OF US. Just tell us to buy some zucchini noodles at the store. The superstars of this book - Almond Chia Energy Bites and the Loaded Sweet Potatoes.

This is a very good book w/ plenty of recipes. The plan is to have a combination of juices, smoothies, & meals for more satifying & less hungry results while still being healthful & effective. I haven’t seen any soy products listed & all but hemp seeds & spirulina powder (if you choose to use them) are ingredients I can find @ WM. So easy to find ingredients & not overwhelming. The 5-day grocery list is handy. There are also handy notes made for substitutions that can cut expense or adjust recipes to what’s on hand or preferred. I found these substitution notes handy since I really don’t want to guess & make a yukie tasting recipe that wastes my time or groceries. Each recipe notes the number of servings. Most are single serve, some for 2, & the meal recipes are either for 2 or 4 servings. The low suger recipes are also noted as such. The recipes all look very good & likable! For folks who want pictures of all the recipes, you won’t get that. But this is a very nice book, laid out well, easy to follow, & includes a personal eating diary for you to fill out & make this individulized to you. It can be varied, strict or less stringent according to what you want for yourself, & the juices can be smoothies instead for more fiber for diabetics if needed. It’s an easy diet to make your own according to your tastes, needs, & how much you want from it & how fast or gradually you want to change your current diet. My only real criticism is that it has no basic calorie, fat, carb, sugar, & protein info listed w/ the recipes. The author is a nitritionist, so I guess you can trust that, but I’m sure people wanting to control or just prevent diabetic or renal disease will still want & need basic nutrition information for these recipes. I would like that info too just because I want to know that for all the recipes I keep & make in my own kitchen. I’m still goving it 5 stars tho because it is a very good book & better than several others I’ve seen lately like it.

I love this book. The recipes are great and I've learned a lot about juicing. I look at it every week for my favorites and new things to juice. There are blended drinks too so even if you don't have a juicer you can use it. This is a must buy if you are interesed in juiceing and being healther.

Great short read

Got this book for my young son. He loves race cars and this book gives him a lot to learn and look at. Unfortunately, the way NASCAR changes logos and sponsors, the driver info becomes out of date quick. The history lesson of the sport is great, though.

Overall very informative--lots of information.

PAUL TEUTUL JR was just 27 when American Chopper: Jet Bike premiered on the Discovery Channel, featuring “Paulie” and his father, Paul Sr., building a custom chopper for 2002's Laconia Bike Week. Part of Bike Weekend, the one-off special and the intrinsic family dynamics so captivated audiences that a full series following the Teutuls and their business, Orange County Choppers, soon followed in 2003. Six years of family ups and downs ensued, culminating in 2009 with Senior firing Junior, who waited out his one-year non-compete clause before establishing his own business, Paul Jr. Designs. The book was interesting. I believe it was genuine and truthful. It held my interest completely in I had watched American Choppers from the beginning and Jr's has an amazing talent. If you are an American Chopper fan you will like the book as it covers those years and into Jr's own business. I do not think there are any real revelations that if you followed these guys at all, you did not know already. But still an interesting read and I would say read it if a fan.

Not very detailed, he leaves out more then he puts in about the show. Many blank filler pages. I wish it was much more detailed about the shop. Example about Vinnie all he says is "we hired a good friend called Vinnie" Nothing about why he left. But it was OK to hear it from Paul Jr.

If you are - were - a fan of American Chopper and The Teutal's, you will find the "behind the scenes" insight interesting. Through the years, we all watched Jr. mature in his craftsmanship and designs becoming the true motorcycle artisan we respect and have enjoyed, as well as the not so suttle personal side of family and freinds. This book highlights many of those times building towards the man/husband/father Jr has become and who the life changing growth he gives the credit to. I totally enjoyed it!

Paul Jr. really did a great job writing this book. I normally don't read books, but I saw Jr on the Mike Huckabee show. After hearing Paul Jr's testimony I was sold. It has really been a joy to read. Enjoyed reading this book since I've been a fan since the beginning of the show. The book reads very fast, and reveals interesting information about Paul Jr.'s faith in God and love of family.

An awesome read and must have for any fan of the show, Jr gets real and open about his life, loved this book.

Read it in ONE sitting -- could not put it down. Pauli is exactly as I had hoped (prayed) he would be. Go Junior!!!

Studying practices such as polygyny or divorce not from abstract doctrines but from women’s experiences of living in, with, or through them is radical. Majeed treats women as a source of knowledge about Islam, taking seriously experiences of Muslim women who “share their husbands.” Muslim womanism, in Majeed’s view “positions the experiences and wisdom of women at the forefront of any consideration of Muslim family life.” Women's experiences of polygyny (as of marriage in general) differ considerably; some find it liberatory while others, perhaps most, struggle to varying degrees. I taught this book in a seminar on Women, Gender, and Islam, where students really appreciated the stories and the grounding in contemporary American life but wished for additional analysis of patriarchal marriage more generally. I have also used the chapter on W.D. Muhammad’s interpretation of the scriptural verses on polygyny with great success in my Qur’an class.

With Polygyny, author Debra Majeed provides a personal yet scholarly investigation into a practice that is not well understood for its complexity, its function within the African American Muslim community, and its relationship to family law within Islam as well as to the American legal system. Her crisp descriptive stories of Muslim women and their families associated with the practice are embedded in a philosophical perspective she identifies as Muslim womanism and in her ethnographic evidence from 2003 to 2013. Readers are introduced to a range of issues that are rich in texture, as they are the basis for examining women’s agency and authority in such marital relationships, religious prescriptions in the Qur’an, legal forms of legitimation for polygyny, Imam Mohammed’s teachings on polygyny, and psychological factors associated with the well being of women and children in multiple-wife marriages.Throughout the well-crafted six chapters, Majeed stays focused on her intent “to encourage self-examination of Muslim American family life and promote closer attention to the welfare of African American communities, American families, and society as whole” (6). In the Afterword, she also provides practical suggestions that follow up on her intellectual exploration into the lives of her subjects. These suggestions include five recommendations: 1). engage in meaningful dialogue and education about forms of Islamic marriage within the context of the secular United States; 2). require local mosques and Islamic organizations to document marriage registrations; 3). state the relationship a wife envisions in marriage contracts and encourage families to seek advice from knowledgeable and respected community members, marriage therapists, and family law experts; 4). encourage first and potential subsequent wives to communicate with each other prior to any multiple-wife marriage; and 5). remove communal acceptance of marriage ceremonies that take place without a husband’s current wife (or wives) knowledge.Of particular interest to this reader are the reasons that African American Muslim women enter into polygyny. For some it is a matter of recognizing that multiple-wife marriage is permissible based on the Qur’an and it ensures the survival of family (Sawdah); for some it is a way to be chaste and avoid bad situations (Zuhara); and for some it is a means to avoid unwanted attention and attain security, status, and honor (Lamisha). Significantly, for all the women in Majeed’s fictional performance in chapter two, the method of presentation allows her to use her informants, with whom she had multiple interviews, to discuss issues with each other and to communicate their thoughts about their life circumstances in their own words. In doing so, Majeed ably succeeds in her laudable intent to “link [her] intellectual explorations to practical applications that can benefit communities and subjects [she] stud[ied]” (133). The contributions Polygyny makes to scholarship and to praxis is that it demonstrates an inclusivity that Majeed envisions is needed to open up potential spaces for further examination and development on this topic. So that, while she neither promotes nor condones polygyny, she supports its decriminalization—a book on this topic is what I hope awaits her readers.Audiences for this text include both readers wanting to understand choices available to African American Muslim women within a polygynist family and readers aspiring to understand with greater depth the historical, religious, and sociological context of this particular marital relationship.

Baptist historians Thomas Kidd and Barry Hankins have described that gamut in Baptists in America: A History. From the pre-colonial era right up to the 21st century, Kidd and Hankins examine the character, theology, and role of Baptists in American history.The first half of the history of Baptists in America made me proud to call myself a Baptist. We all know that many of the early colonists came to America for religious freedom. What is often forgotten is that some of them only wanted freedom for their own kind; Baptists were excluded from enjoying that freedom. Some New England Baptists wondered "whether their liberties were safer under the king of England than under colonial authorities." Baptists were imprisoned, beaten, and forbidden from meeting. They were compelled to pay taxes to support state churches. Yet as the colonies won their independence from England, the Baptists' insistence on religious liberty won the day.Other parts of the history of Baptists in America gave me mixed feelings about being a Southern Baptist. In the growing nation, slavery became a more and more contested issue. Southern Baptists eventually split off from their northern brethren. They unconscionably defended slavery using scripture. They believed that slavery was sometimes an occasion for sin, but that the institution itself was OK. In spite of this terrible oversight (not exclusive to Baptists, of course), the Southern Baptists retained a more Orthodox theological position, in contrast to their counterparts up north, who succumbed to the liberal influences of the Social Gospel and higher criticism.The final portion of Baptists in America reminded me why I no longer attend a Southern Baptist church. Mirroring the earlier conflicts over higher criticism, Southern Baptists in the late 20th century began narrowing the definition of Baptist, and actively excluding those who did not fit the bill. Kidd and Hankins give a nice summary history of this period of Southern Baptist life, but I felt like they were too kind to the movement. The witch hunt mentality, the outright lies that were told, the careers that were derailed, not the mention the institutions that were weakened and the personal relationships that were destroyed, all set in motion a further dissembling and weakening of the Southern Baptist Convention. This controversy led, in part, to my departure from the SBC, as well as many other Baptists.I wish they would have covered a parallel controversy, which also played a role in many Baptists' departure for other churches. I found it interesting that, according to Kidd and Hankins, some of the early Baptist movements in America were accompanied by signs and wonders and spiritual manifestations. At some point along the way, however, Baptists became cessationists, claiming that manifestation gifts (tongues, healing, words of knowledge) were only practiced during the apostolic age and are no longer valid. About the same time the witch hunt for "liberals" was in force in the SBC, a charismatic movement was sweeping through American denominations, including Baptists. While a few churches embraced the movement, the Convention as a whole rejected it, calling home (firing) missionaries and other denominational workers who were reputed to be exercising these gifts. I wondered what Kidd and Hankins might say about this, but it wasn't addressed. (Perhaps my personal experience has inflated in my mind the importance of this expression of Baptist life!)Kidd and Hankins's overall theme is compelling. Baptists have, in just a few hundred years, progressed from being a tiny, persecuted minority, to being a huge, diverse, and powerful force in the global church and in American life as a whole. Yet at the heart of Baptist life is a feeling of outsider status. While few Baptists hold to the Landmarkian belief that only their little strain of Baptists are true Christians, Baptists tend stubbornly to believe their way is the right way (as evidenced by the countless schisms among Baptists as they disagree about what the right way really is).I enjoyed Kidd and Hankins's readable, engaging history. Baptists in America follows the contours of Baptist life, and is chock full of anecdote after anecdote of the activities of our Baptist forebears. I had some seminars with Hankins as student at Baylor and remember well the passion for engaging his subject; that passion comes through in Baptists in America. (I don't know Kidd, but I suspect he shares Hankins's passion and engagement.)Kidd and Hankins conclude that there is little that defines what a Baptist is, other than "evangelism and schism." They write, "Historically, a Baptist church is a local body of baptized believers who come together and call themselves Baptist." I would think that many churches (like my own) who have eschewed denominational labels would trace their roots to Baptist denominations and would still be included in the Baptist family. Even though the word Baptist is nowhere found on my church sign, and even though my church doesn't participate in any Baptist denominational life, Kidd and Hankins have reminded me that perhaps I am still a Baptist after all.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

From seed form in the first colonies, to peak-Baptist in the late 1980s, for better or for worse, the Baptist influence in America cannot be denied. Surprisingly, following the Baptist thread of American history provides an amazingly instructive perspective for understanding the development of America, from its initial stage consisting of multiple officially Christian British colonies to its present stage of consolidated power and avowed religious neutrality. From Roger Williams’ encounter with the fledgling Massachusetts Bay Colony in the early 1600s, to Russell Moore in 2015, "Baptists in America" engagingly covers it all. Especially refreshing and enlightening is the bold commentary generously interjected by the authors, which keeps the history relevant and alive from beginning to end. I thoroughly tested the highlighting limits of my Kindle app! Baptists in America is a highly rewarding read.

Baptists are not the most homogenous group. This could make writing readable histories about them a significant challenge. In this volume, Kidd and Hankins provide a quality, readable, and engaging story. If you have read David Bebbington’s Baptists through the Centuries: a History of a Global People, you will find this volume fits with it like a puzzle, providing the American ‘zoom in’ that was not possible in Bebbington’s broader work. If you are looking for a book to bolster your personal Baptist polemics, this is not that book. It is even and thorough, a quality telling of the Baptist story. If you are a Baptist in America (whatever flavor), you will find your own history in the pages of this book.

I am particularly interested in the history of Christianity in America. I've written quite a bit and lectured extensively on this topic over the past few years. So, I was very excited to see that one of my favorite historians, Thomas Kidd, had a new work titled Baptists in America. I was less familiar with Barry Hankins (the book's co-author), but he and Kidd made an excellent team. I intend to read more from Hankins in the coming months.I love that Kidd and Hankins take great care to attach important moments in baptist history to historically noteworthy instances in American history. This is very helpful in aiding the reader to situate baptist history in its larger, contextual, setting. I commend the authors for being (in my opinion) very fair in the appraisal of controversial moments in baptist history. I would note that their handling of the conservative resurgence was well-written and gracious.One feature of the book that is especially timely is the discussion of the baptist emphasis on religious liberty. I think most readers will find this segment of the book quite useful. As debates over the role of religion continue in our country, it is a nice reminder that baptists have always stood for religious liberty.Baptists in America is an excellent text. I would strongly encourage all baptists, history buffs, church historians, and general readers alike to add this book to your summer reading list. Great work by Thomas Kidd and Barry Hankins.

He advised the TV programme ‘Top Gear' on travel to and in Kurdistan for a TV Christmas special and his expertise is constantly sought by the press and other media when comment and opinion on travel to Iraq is being discussed.Karen Dabrowska was born in Wellington, New Zealand to Polish parents. She worked on a daily paper in New Zealand for six years before emigrating to Britain in 1985, where she completed an MA in International Journalism. She has edited a number of magazines and newsletters dealing with the Arab world including New Horizon and has visited most Arab countries. From 1991-2011 Karen was the London correspondent of Jana News Agency and Assistant Editor of Islamic Tourism Magazine and since 2012 she has been the London correspondent for the Tripoli Post. In 2003 Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, who was in charge of the Iraq post-war reconstruction, offered up some advice stating,"Tourism is going to be something important in that country as soon as the security situation is resolved, and I think that will be resolved as the Iraqis take over more and more responsibility for their own government." (Source: George Packer. The Assassins' Gate: America in Iraq (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, NY 2005, pp. 242). It is now 2015 and with the rise of ISIL, the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated greatly. Last month, Bradt released the 2nd edition of their Iraq guidebook, first published in 2002. It was clearly a bold move as between 2003 and 2009, tourism in Iraq had all but disappeared except for religious tourism to the holy Shia sites of Karbala and Najaf. In 2009, one of the book's authors,Geoff Hann, organized a tour to the country which encompassed almost the length of Iraq from Kurdistan down to Basra stopping at many archaeological sites along the way. From then on, Mr. Hann has led very comprehensive tours to the country annually. His tour company is one of less than a handful to do that. Clearly Iraq is not a travel destination that can easily be arranged, and the number of tourists (not the religious type) that make it to the country annually probably do not reach 3 digits. It is in this context that I find the publication of this guidebook a real surprise and kudos to Bradt for making this possible.. This book is written to be a guidebook only. It will not go into depth about Mesopotamian and Iraqi history, nor does it strive to be an archaeological catalog of the ancient sites. Alongside the descriptions of the many cities and sites, one is surprised to see listings which include "how to get there", rankings of hotels, shopping, lists of local restaurants, etc. How many tourists actually get into Iraq to see the sites described in the book? Unfortunately the answer is "not many". Some of the sites have now sadly been destroyed by ISIL, and the book does mention this; BUT, the book is a good read, well written by people who have traveled extensively in the country, and and gives hope that in the future tourism will definitely become an important factor in the Iraqi economy. The only criticism I have is that it would be nice to have the inclusion of more photographs.
