This is an excellent book, even though it's several years old now. It's very interesting and well-written, and contains all the basic information that's missing from the bird identification guides, like how birds build their nests and what the different calls and songs mean. There is also information on bird houses, attracting birds, water sources, gardens, and much more. Information on the most common birds and bird-helpful plants for the various regions of the United States is included too. I've been feeding birds for several years, but this book had a lot of new information for me.Over the years, I've found that a bird watcher needs several books: This one, a field guide with lots of pictures (The Sibley Guide to Birds is the best I've seen for bird identification), maybe a statewide field guide, and a huge book with a title something like Complete Birds of North America, for more details on individual birds after you've identified them.I highly recommend this book as an essential part of any birder's library.
I am new to birdwatching and purchased this book along with Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. The Sibley guide covers more birds, but the Audubon has all of the common ones that I see in my yard, and has actual photos of the book as opposed to the drawings in the Sibley guide. I find that I refer to both of them frequently, however the Audubon book is one that you can sit down and read, whereas the Sibley one is a true field guide with just a paragraph on each type of bird. The Audobon book is a great starter book, and not only contains information on particular bird species, but also has great information on bird behavior and things you can do to encourge more visitors to your yard. I have enjoyed this book so much I just purchased it as a Christmas gift for my sister who is new to birdwatching also.
This book is fantastic. It is everything it was described to be, and fits our lifestyle watching our birds at our home.The colors and the description is perfect. We have already found several birds in this book from seeing them in our yard where we feed them everyday, that we wasn't sure of what kind they were....Perfect Gift for anybody that is caught up in the beauty of watching birds. I gave this to my husband for his birthday, but no only do we both enjoy, our grandkids love looking up birds they see in the yard and finding the name of each one...
I bought this book basically because I have a bird feeder that was attracting a beautiful bird and I wanted to identify it. The book's photos are great and I was quickly able to find the one I sought. It provides basic information which is also helpful. In this case, I learned "my bird" is found in Texas and more southern areas with my home being in the northern parts of it's habitat. I also learned it is basically a shy bird. I'm sure for the casual bird watcher, this is a fine book with helpful information.
This big volume covers almost every aspect of husbanding and observing one's backyard birds. It's so big and comprehensive that it's almost a coffee-table book. I would have liked more material on bird boxes (houses), but the Internet fills in that gap.
Good reference book but not the same edition I had originally (1998), sure wish the cd of bird songs/calls came with it as the original did.
My mother-in-law is a big bird watcher, but also a gardener. When I saw this book, it looked like a good bet for a Christmas gift. She loved it! We looked through it together, and I was very impressed. The book has great information, beautiful pictures, and is well organized. I know my mother-in-law will get lots of use out of this thing. It's exactly what I was hoping it would be.
Unfortunately, this book was not in thecondition that it was stated. *See pictures for details.* Corners are ripped. Binding is damaged and i hope thats not snot on the back page.
