A Nation by Design: Immigration Policy in the Fashioning of America

Review

A Nation by Design is the first comprehensive account of American immigration policy from the colonial period to the present. One of its great strengths is that it places American developments in a cross-national and comparative perspective. Professor Zolberg's breadth of knowledge and the range of his reading are remarkable. The book abounds in fresh insights and interpretations, comprehensiveness and richness of detail. This is a magnum opus. (George Fredrickson, Stanford University)A Nation by Design is certain to become a standard reference for immigration scholars and a must-read for graduate students in the disciplines-history, political science, and sociology-that produce the bulk of these scholars. It provides a genuinely new perspective on the creation and centrality of immigration policy, and as befits a new point of view, it sketches a landscape with features that have not been visible before. (Richard Alba, State University of New York at Albany)A Nation by Design is a monumental work by one of America's most distinguished and most historically minded social scientists. No other book on immigration possesses its sweep, nor does any other analyze the history of American immigration policy as comprehensively and insightfully as this one does. For at least a generation, A Nation by Design will become the starting point for anyone seeking to delve into this complex and important subject. (Gary Gerstle, University of Maryland)This beautifully realized and intellectually capacious analytical history moves the story of immigration policy from the side to the center of American political development. Deep, learned, and inventive, A Nation by Design profoundly alters what we know and how we think about demography and identity, membership and law, citizenship and belonging as it crosses the boundaries of disciplines, periods, and ideas. (Ira Katznelson, Columbia University)If you want to understand why the politics of immigration take the form they do, read Aristide R. Zolberg's richly informative book immediately...We now have in our hands a book so thoughtful, so extensively researched, and so balanced in its conclusions that if it does not inform both the current debate and the ones sure to follow, the debate is bound to be poorer even than it already is. (Alan Wolfe New Republic 2006-05-08)Aristide Zolberg's A Nation by Design, offers the most comprehensive treatment of US immigration policy ever undertaken and is a major piece of scholarship that will prove indispensable to researchers for years to come. This achievement is no mean feat given the range of historical, political, economic, and sociological analyses of US immigration. What sets Zolberg's treatment apart is its unique historical depth and its realization of the importance of policies and practices other than those officially enacted by Congress--the focus of most earlier historical work on immigration policy...In many ways, immigration is America's never-ending debate. As Zolberg clearly shows, at every point in the history of the nation, from its inception as a dream among idealistic and free-thinking colonists to the present war on terrorism, immigration has figured prominently in debates about who us an American and what it means to be a citizen and resident of the United States. Over the course of US history, attacks on immigrants have waxed and waned, yet in the long run American society has incorporated an ever-widening array of peoples and nationalities into the national franchise. What distinguishes the current wave of anti-immigrant agitation from its predecessors is not its demonizing of foreigners or its harsh treatment of noncitizens, but its clever use of the fear of foreigners to launch a broader assault on the civil liberties not just of immigrants, but of all Americans. (Douglas S. Massey Population and Development Review 2006-09-01)This is the book with which all of us working in the sphere will now have to measure up against. (Kristofer Allersfeldt History 2007-01-01)Aristide R. Zolberg's A Nation by Design: Immigration Policy in the Fashioning of America is an extraordinary achievement. In its sweep, erudition, conceptual precision, and analytic acuity, it may be the most important book on the history of immigration policy published in twenty-five years...One can find no better book than his to understand the role of immigration and immigration policy in the making of America. (Gary Gerstle Dissent 2007-01-01)A brief review cannot highlight the insights and arresting observations peppered throughout every chapter of A Nation by Design...in this hyper-charged political climate Zolberg has provided a singular service. A Nation by Design is both an awesome work of scholarship and an indispensable source for understanding the seamy and complicated ancestry of America’s current politics of immigration. (Michael B. Katz Journal of Social History 2008-03-22)[A] magisterial history of immigration policy. (Ira Katznelson New Republic 2013-07-01)

A Nation By Design is a must read for anyone wants to understand immigration, past and present. I read this before visiting Ellis Island and it added immensely to my trip.

Excellent!

From colonial times to the present, the compromises that emerged over American immigration policy created a state of limbo for groups who were, as Aristide Zolberg puts it in this wide-ranging and erudite book, "wanted but not welcome." In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Asian immigration and naturalization were restricted, but southern and eastern Europeans were allowed in at record levels. In the early 1920s, the nativist camp eventually prevailed over business interests as strict national-origins quotas were imposed, severely limiting immigration for the next four decades. The historical rhetoric resembles today's. Zolberg quotes inventor Samuel Morse invoking the imagery of an invading army of immigrants when he penned a series of articles and books blaming immigration for undermining the American character.Debates in the 1950s invoked the "invasion" image that would lay the groundwork for today's tiered-entry system with front, side, and back doors. After World War II, Americans became uncomfortable with race-based immigration. Discontent had been rising over the controversial bracero guest-worker program, begun in 1942 to ease a wartime shortage of farmworkers. Amid discussions of easing immigration policy in the 1950s, Nevada's U.S. Sen. Pat McCarran and Pennsylvania's U.S. Rep. Francis E. "Tad" Walter, both Democrats, commissioned a review that concluded that it was impossible to seal the border. Their response was a back-door solution: an expanded guest-worker program, but with a ban on allowing guests to become permanent residents. "Albeit well-nigh useless with regard to border control, the system was highly effective as a deterrent to the incorporation of Mexicans, in particular, by way of naturalization," Zolberg writes, pinpointing an issue at the heart of today's immigration conundrum."Borders are necessary to establish and preserve distinctive communities, notably self-governing democracies," Zolberg writes. In addition, given economic disparities among nations, open borders would attract a flood of immigration from poorer to more affluent nations. Yet he also views nativist attacks on immigrants as a far bigger threat to democracy than migration itself. He advocates neither allowing unlimited immigration nor a moratorium on immigration. He argues for giving admissions priority to those in most need--unskilled workers and those fleeing violence. Zolberg contends that to eliminate unauthorized immigration would require creating a police state. Instead, he sensibly advocates improved border security, combined with protection of the rights of minority groups upon whom the populist right has unleashed its wrath.--Michele WuckerAuthor of Lockout: Why America Keeps Getting Immigration Wrong When Our Prosperity Depends on Getting It Right (PublicAffairs Press, 2006; paperback August 2007)

Zolberg's comprehensive history of immigration policy was a new addition to the syllabus in my graduate migration seminar. I think the class as a whole found it useful, if a bit overwhelming. In the humanities and the social sciences there is a lot of talk about "socially constructed" race categories, ethnic political interests, national identities, etc. All of this work contends there is nothing inherently "inside" of people that makes them distinct, but rather it's the way that debates play out in the political arena that groups and separates people. Of course much of the "social constructivism" literature forgets to analyze the construction. That's where Zolberg comes in. "A Nation by Design" is useful because it is a 500 page account of how policy makers in the United States constructed an immigration policy, and along the way, cemented many ideas of race, ethnicity, and American identity. My only quibbles: there are graphs and charts in the back but they are never referenced in the text; the book is full of names of obscure intellectuals and bureaucrats and it gets confusing; Zolberg often buries important theoretical claims in the middle of sub-sections.Maybe it's not a good beach read, but definitely worth having on your shelf.

Review

"… a solid pick and a ‘must’ for any collection looking for an in-depth, fundamental textbook on how to design and work with games."―Midwest Book Review, March 2015 Game Nite’s Editors’ Choice"… this book is considered by many to be the ‘bible’ of game design. … Much of the material has been updated … the introduction to probability … is a must read for aspiring game designers … engaging and thought provoking … a substantial book for someone looking to get serious about game design. … the cards are brilliant and a joy to keep on your desk and pull one or more out and see how they relate to your current design. … Highly recommended."―Game Nite, Issue 2, 2015 "I could not think of a better name for this work because game design isn’t a skillset, it’s a Tao: a way of looking at the world. This was perhaps the most important thing that Jesse ever taught me. It is the principle lesson of this book. … The things you will learn here are universally applicable. … Each section individually is a lens and tool in your designer’s tool belt but, taken as a whole, they form a system of thinking that will allow you to tackle problems well beyond their scope. … this book trains you to think as a designer …"―James Portnow, Game Designer, CEO of Rainmaker Games, and Writer of Extra Credits Praise for the First Edition: Winner of a 2008 Game Developer Front Line Award "This book was clearly designed, not just written, and is an entire course in how to be a game designer. … The book is also intensely practical, giving some of the best advice on how to harness your own subconscious I’ve ever read, as well as short and useful descriptions of probability theory for non-mathematicians, how to diagram interest curves, working with a team, and dozens of other topics. It is simply the best text I’ve seen that really addresses what a designer should know, and then actually gives practical advice about how to gain that knowledge through life experience. It’s a marvelous tour de force and an essential part of anyone’s game design library."―Noah Falstein, Gamasutra.com from Game Developer Magazine "… a good book that teaches the craft of game design in an accessible manner. … The text goes just deep enough to give you practical insight into how the key concepts might be useful without becoming wordy. … If you are looking for a competent introduction to game design, this book is a good place to start."―Daniel Cook, Gamasutra.com, February 2009 "As indicated by its title, Jesse Schell’s The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses uses many different perspectives (the titular lenses), which each prompt their own important questions, ranging from ‘What problems does my game ask the players to solve?’ to ‘What does beauty mean within the context of my game?’ These distinct points are interwoven throughout a step-by-step analysis of the design process that begins with the designer and his or her basic idea, and builds successfully from there. As with Rules of Play, the wealth of information presented by The Art of Game Design may seem daunting at first, but Schell’s agreeable voice eases the reader into a series of invaluable angles we can (and should) use to evaluate what we play."―1up.com "Easily the most comprehensive, practical book I’ve ever seen on game design."―Will Wright, Designer of The Sims, SimCity, and Spore "Jesse has lovingly crafted a great resource for both aspiring developers as well as seasoned gaming industry veterans. I highly recommend this book."―Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski, CEO Boss Key and Former Design Director for Epic Games "Inspiring and practical for both veterans and beginners."―Bob Bates, Game Designer and Co-Founder of Legend Entertainment "Jesse Schell’s new book, The Art of Game Design, is a marvelous introduction to game design by a true master of the form. Schell is the rarest of creatures: a gifted teacher who is also a talented and successful current game designer. This book reflects Jesse’s skill at presenting information clearly and coherently, and the knowledge he has acquired as a master game designer. I have already referenced this book while preparing lectures and classes in the U.S., Germany, and New Zealand, and recommend it as an invaluable aid for anyone interested in game design. The Art of Game Design is a pitch-perfect blend of valuable knowledge and insights with an informal and compelling presentation. The sections on harnessing the creative power of the subconscious mind are particularly insightful and delightfully written. It is immediately clear that Jesse Schell not only knows the theory behind what he writes about; he has also put it to use many times and honed his techniques to perfection. A must-read for anyone interested in interactive design, and even the creative process in general."―Noah Falstein, Chief Game Designer, Google "The Art of Game Design describes precisely how to build a game the world will love and elegantly crank it through the realities of clients and publishers. It draws wisdom from Disneyland to Michelangelo, gradually assembling a supply of concrete game design rules and subtle psychological tricks that actually work in surprising ways. It is fertilizer for the subconscious: keep a stack of Post-it notes nearby to record all the game ideas that will sprout out of your own head while reading."―Kyle Gabler, Game Designer and Founder of 2D Boy, Makers of World of Goo "He embodies a tradition of reconciling diverse disciplines, extending the possibilities of each and creating new theories and opportunities for both industry and academia. Jesse is like the Einstein of entertainment."―Mk Haley, Walt Disney Research "Packed with Jesse’s real-world experience and humorous insight, The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses is a tool chest crossed with a kaleidoscope. Both fantastical and practical, methodical and wonder-full, this book and deck will have you looking at and dreaming up games with a fresh vision. Like a chemistry set for making mental explosions, it’s an idea(l) book guiding the design process for both new and seasoned game designers. In short, using Jesse’s book is FUN."―Heather Kelley, Artist and Game Designer "The Art of Game Design is one of a handful of books I continuously reference during production. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for ways to approach your design from a fresh perspective, this book is a must for your library."―Neil Druckmann, Creative Director on The Last of Us at Naughty Dog "On games industry desks, books tend to come and go, but they all seem to go on top of Jesse Schell’s The Art of Game Design, because that’s the one book that seems to stick around."―Jason VandenBerghe, Creative Director, Ubisoft "Ken Rolston, internationally celebrated game designer, recommends Jesse Schell’s The Art of Game Design both for smart people and for people who are learning how to be smart."―Ken Rolston, Director of Design, Turbine

The Art of Game Design - A Book Of Lenses is a must own for any game designer. Don't judge the book just by the intro: while he starts at a very basic level (such as the lens of experience: "What experience do we want the player to have in our game, and how can the game capture the essence of that experience?) - he evolves into every aspect of game design even getting deeper like the lens of chance, where you make sure your game has enough randomness to create elements of SURPRISE but not so much that the player feels a lack of control. There's a great section where he covers generalized age & gender expectations so you can either target or expand your audience...And by the end he gets into teambuilding aspects, marketing, ensuring profitability, etc...It's a truly wonderful book. The best part is it doesn't just tell you how - it asks YOU intelligent questions about YOUR GAME designed to elicit intelligent responses that will help you better your game.5 stars, easily. The book quite literally blew my mind... The section on brainstorming alone was worth its value. Priceless! This book took me from being an indie artist with no understanding of gameplay to being a real game designer with an understanding of how to make sure a game is FUN, AND appealing to my target audience.Don't hesitate to own this book. You'll learn from it, and then lenses will last you a lifetime.

This poor review is for the digital book only.DO NOT BUY THE DIGITAL OR KINDLE VERSION. I was so disappointed to find out this book was a plain old PDF, which is a real pain in the butt to read on a screen device. You can't search, don't have fluid margins, can't increase the font size or change to night mode, etc.Huge disappointment in that regard, but the content in the book itself is wonderful. I recommend purchasing it in old-fashioned paperback.

A well-written and engaging book that, while focused on game design, provides insights far beyond the world of game design and is full of useful advice for anyone designing anything. The book guides the reader through the entire design process, starting with discussing the designer's ultimate objective (to create an experience); continuing through understanding the elements that comprise games, addressing the needs of players, exploring the fundamental types of game mechanics, developing game worlds; and concluding with how to deal with clients, how to pitch a game, and how games transform their audiences.Along the way, the author present a series of 100 "lenses" through which designers can focus on specific aspects of their design. Each lens provides a series of questions that help designers stay on track during the course of their design. The author also sells a card set called "A Deck of Lenses" which present these lenses with illustrations [...] The deck of lenses is also available as an smart phone/tablet app [...]As I noted above, many of the concepts in this book can be applied to not only game design, but also provide insights that can be applied to other fields as well. I'm a big fan of Walt Disney Imagineering, and found that many of the design principles in this book are the same principles used by the Imagineers in the design of Disney theme parks. Based on the author's background (Jesse Schell is a former Imagineer), this wasn't too big a surprise, but I still find the parallels worth noting.I highly recommend this book to anyone working in the game industry, as well as anyone interested in design in general. You'll be glad you added this book to your library.

This book is awesome. I'm just a beginner studying Gaming Design and this works for me. It works a lot on concepts, induces some exercises and self-criticizing about how to think when creating content. Goes much more theoretical than practical so if you need to learn about Coding, this is not your book. Expect reading a lot about every type possible of "game", not only about the electronic-modern type, but also card-game, story-telling game, etc.

Fantastically good book on game design. This is not, however, a beginner book, in my opinion. This is definitely something to read if you've already started designing a game, or have some experience in game design. Regardless, it carries with it quite a bit of good advice and theory on many aspects of making games. Truly a book on the art (and craft) of game design. This book goes really well with the book "Challenges for Game Designers" by Brenda (Braithwaite)Romero and Ian Schreiber.

I am an independent game developer, And this is one of my favorites books ever. Schell teaches how to develop a game from 0 to end. It is an easy reading and I was amazed at the improvements of my own games. 5 stars review absolutely

I had a notion of designing a game. This book was recommended somewhere, I don't remember where. I read an excerpt and it seemed to offer up some good information, and a good place to start to get an overview of what is involved.Upon reading it, I was blown away. Schell covers everything, quite literally everything. I found that the lenses he reveals are useful regardless of what you're doing. I am an in-house designer for a major corporation and can readily see how the topics covered can help in my "day job", both internally to working with the teams in the company, but also in addressing our customers and their needs. You won't get the technical "how to code something" information, or algorithms or strategies. You will get the underlying principles and guidance for building pretty much any project, games or otherwise.Thank you for publishing this Mr. Schell.

I was just reading through them when I first got it and it already had an effect on clarifying my image of how I'm going to design and build my game. So I would say it's worth it. No I don't have the book, it's not necessary if you're not into heavy educational books which I'm not.
